Title: My GS won't run past an idle?
Post by: OregoncoastGS on November 18, 2014, 01:31:07 PM
I'm trying to revive a '97 GS500. I rebuilt the carbs set the idle screws and floats, but it dies when you try to rev it up. Any ideas?

I have the same problem but after the engine warms up for a minute or two I can rev as much as I want.  I believe the root of my problem is a vacuum leak since the boots to the engine are old, dry, with visible cracks.

That just sounds like a GS500. I'd replace those boots anyway.

I can let it run for 30mins and the second I roll up the throttle it will die. It's driving me crazy.

Jets or passages blocked? .... something not connected right/go over it again? ... something missing during reassembly?..... and.. be honest ;) did you take any shortcuts during the.rebuild?

This is a good point.  I've accidentally swapped jets after a carb rebuild.

Looks like the valve shims are all worn. It does have 51k miles on it. I'll just keep tinkering and see if it gets better one fix at a time.

I would check the vacuum as it's the easiest for a visual inspection, then check the Jets and if those are all good, go for the shims, if you have over 12,000 miles it's worth replacing them if they haven't been done already anyways.
