Title: Petcock problem
Post by: Shemagh on November 27, 2014, 07:58:29 AM
Hello, today I took off my fuel tank and saw  this picture (https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/SO8LWN2IQ0M_KoWjn9qOAqbn_KLMsQs7eYoTeceuWfM=w93-h140-p)
I understand that reserve and usual lines are connected. Can anyone tell me or show me where I need to connect these rubber pipes if I want to restore original setting? And is there any lever that connects with petcock so I can turn it on reserve without the need to disassemble? Sorry, my english are not that good, but I´ll try.
Thanks

Tank to frame petcock hoses for all models:

Tank petcock can be turned off and on by lifting rear of tank a few inches and reaching in from right side of bike with long screwdriver.

Ok so it´s normal when it is always on? My gsxf have plastic knob where I can turn it.

Tank petcock is always on except when removing tank, changing hoses, etc.  Frame petcock has vacuum shutoff, tank petcock off and on is with screwdriver only.

Frame petcock 89-99 models:

Ok, thanks man. Now I understand. I bought my 94 year gs500  2 months ago, and it worked perfectly, but there is winter now in estonia and I started to check it and when I saw that fuel system, I was a little bit confused. Keep up the good work helping newbies. :thumb:

OK. I see the connections at the frame petcock.  Do we have any graphics of the tank petcock/shutoff?

Not sure what exactly you want to see.  My 3 panel diagram in my first post above shows the hose connections from the tank to the frame petcock, all have the same tank petcock which actually is just a shutoff valve and they show all the tank and frame petcocks as viewed from the left side of the bike.

Tha parts fiches for 89-02 models showed the frame petcock from the left side and the tank petcock from the right side with hoses shown crossing where they actually didn't cross so I made the diagrams above to show all models correctly.

Here is a partial view from the early parts fiches showing the petcock from the right side and the screw slot is vertical when open and turned horizontal when closed.  In all cases the longer tube is for reserve and is mounted toward the front of the bike.

Thanks gsJack.

The last pic shows exactly what I wanted to see.  I knew there had to be a cutoff at the tank but have never seen it, as in your last pic.

Now I know how to shut off the gas supply before I take the tank off.

And when you turn it back to ON make sure you remembered where was it exactly before you did anything. First time I took my tank off and cut out the gas supply from the tank petcock I had this problem, when I wanted to turn it to ON again I turned the screw all the way to ON and it didn't let 100% of the gas down the hose. What fixed it was turning it to vertical position - pointing directly to ON.
