Title: cleaned carbs, hose routing questions
Post by: nickxedge on December 10, 2014, 09:35:34 AM
Hello all.

The original owner of my bike had let it sit for quite a while before the PO purchased it.  To give you an idea, it's a '97 and when I bought it (3rd owner), it had 4046 miles on it.  The PO put a new tank on it when he got it a year before me (I got it this past August) and cleaned up the major areas.  As motorcycles are a new venture for me, I was excited to take it apart, clean it up further and put it back together.

It's missing quite a few screws/bolts here and there which I've been replacing as I go.  I watched a great video on basic carb cleaning before I did anything, to get familiar with the setup.  I noticed while taking it apart that some of the hoses were not the same as the video - likely due to PO putting the new tank on and not being careful with them, I guess?

I got everything pretty much where it goes... here's my concerns:

The tank breather hose that connects in front of the tank petcock was not there at all when I began.  There is also a random breather hose coming from the carburetor that seems to have no place to go - does this hose connect to the tank?  Are they supposed to be joined?

Also, the air box drain hose was just dangling down the frame of the bike.  Is there a specific routing system this should follow?  Also, what is the end supposed to be like?  Open, sealed, have a hole?  Mine is definitely worn - it's rubber but some areas of the tip are cracked and falling apart.  I can show a picture if need be.

As always, thank you in advance for the amazing support and help you all provide.  I could not find a clear diagram that answers these questions.

Search the forum you will no doubt find these kinds of answers as these are common questions.

The drain hose which connects to the tank is routed down below the air box.  It doesn't connect to anything.

The breather hose coming from the carb doesn't connect to anything.  Usually run it over the air box but you could route it anywhere, it just needs to be unrestricted.

Air box drain hose runs down by the right footpeg.  There is a retainer clip for it there.  The tip should have a cap on it but the cap should have a tiny opening (slit) to allow fuel entering the air box to drain.

I would also highly recommend purchasing a repair manual if you haven't already. YouTube videos will not always cut it when doing repairs.
