I was looking to buy a k&n lunchbox air filter I was wondering if anyone has put one on a gs500f 04-up. I'm not sure if the gs500e is set up differently. This is what I found for the filter k&n ru 2970 http://m.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=K%26n+ru+2970&isNewKw=1&_pgn=1&epp=24&itemId=&isRefine=true&mfs=SBCLK&acimp=0&sqp=K%26n+ru+2970&trksid=p2056088.m2428.l1313.TR0.TRC0.XK%26n+ru+2970
If that is the right or wrong one someone please let me
Know before I buy and try.
Also I'm trying to find a good exhaust not to loud but something where it won't sound like a pissed off electric weed wacker. I want a deeper sound. I'm trying to buy through ebay or amazon and was wondering what is best sounding. Have found yoshimura, gpr, and a cheaper brand delkevic. Not sure about where to find others or best. Any input or opinions would be great thanks. Or any info on other things to do to the bike

I have a 2005 GS 500F.
It is equipped with a K&N SU-5589, and it's great. I would recommend you buy the service kit that allows you to clean it a few times before you replace it. I think the cleaning kit is 20 bucks.

I also have a Yoshimura Exhaust and there is a thread here about it that is not too old. I love that exhaust...it really makes a difference.
Thanks for your response I appreciate it. Now with that filter the su 5589. Is that a single filter ? So I would have to buy two right?
No sir. Just the one. It is expensive enough....
Although that link I sent you is a good price, you don't need to stock up! LOL.

Just one. it's a direct replacement for the OEM filter, it goes into the stock airbox.

I have a yoshi, it's pretty nice. It's deeper, but you're not going to get away from the sewing machine sound. That's a twin. Get an I4 if you want something smoother.
I've got a delkevic and the K&N lunch box.
I quite like the way it sounds
hey guys,
sorry to jump in, Im looking to replace my OEM air filter in my 08' GS500, though are they normally pretty pricey, considering oil filters seem to be about 1/5 the price :\? local store sells the Suzuki OEM for around $42, ebay have some sort of "Hi-Flo" which works out to be around $35 imported, K&N around around $60 - $100. I came across this one on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GMAJQG/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687622&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000E2CS04&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1WZ3SQG7TGPC9MWWDGWS (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GMAJQG/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687622&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000E2CS04&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1WZ3SQG7TGPC9MWWDGWS) which seems to be of the same or similar "Hi-Flo style costing around $27 (inc shipping to Australia). I'm not familiar with the different types of filters, though they all appear to be the same or similar style to the OEM in the airbox. Just wondering if anyone had an opinion on what to get that's as good as the OEM without being costly? Im leaning towards importing the one from amazon, though if anyone has any suggestions, would be great.
p.s. If I get a "Hi-Flo" type, I don't have to rejet do I ? I've read many posts of people not needing to rejet after they upgrade theirs...
Thanks, :)

Any sort of drop-in replacement for the airbox filter will likely be fine without rejetting. It won't provide any sort of real performance gains.
However, you should probably rejet your bike anyway because the stock jetting is garbage.
Thanks Dr.M :) Might order the one from Amazon and go from there.
Regarding jets, what makes the stock jets garbage? Im planning on selling my bike though didnt want to put a lot of $ into it & if there is any performance gains from new jets, would they still be restricted with a stock muffler/exhaust system ?
Thanks again :)

The bike is jetted lean and has notorious overheating problems. Even a modest increase in jets will improve the cooling of the cylinders.

Thanks :), any recommendations on what jets (cheapest yet decent) to get ?
Thanks again :)

Talk to Buddha if you want jets for cheaper than you could get elsewhere. I went ahead and installed a dynojet kit because I have a local dynojet and the kit indicates the HP boost you'll get off it.
Since you are just looking to richen up the bike a little you can probably buy some jets off of either buddha or someone else in the forum.
Thanks Dr.M :)
Think I might leave the re-jetting for now. If I do sell the bike, maybe next owner might make some changes.
Before I order http://www.amazon.com/Hiflofiltro-HFA3503-Premium-Replacement-Filter/dp/B001GMAJQG
I came across some universal pod filters on ebay. According to the gs500 wiki, a few people use them, though wondering what your thoughts were ?

I know they from china, but would they be no good? Who they definitely require re-jetting ?
Thanks again, :)

In general any filter that provides substantially improved airflow (pods, etc) over the stock airbox will require a rejet. This is because they will lean out the AFR with all that extra air.
I wouldn't be afraid of doing a rejet. It costs around $20 for new jets, $20 for a carb rebuild kit (per carb), so the entire job would be around $60 bucks and your bike would run better. Just be careful and keep track of the o-rings on your jets. If you do everything carefully the hardest part is syncing them, and that's because you need to find a friend with a good sync tool, unless you want to do it ghetto (search around the forum for homemade sync tools). If you didn't want to, I know most shops around me will do carb rebuilds + sync for $150 with parts. I guess it's all how much you value your time and your learning experience.
