Hey everyone!
My 1998 GS500E is in peril. After having it sit for a month, I went to start it up and it started alright, and after a couple minutes of idling I shut it off. Leaving the bike for a few moments, I came back and fuel was leaking everywhere! It was coming from my right side pod air filter and my right side carb! Realizing that my floats may be stuck, I disassembled my carbs and when I took my right side float bowl off, the float came with it! Turns out my o ring for the float was cooked, plus my needle valve seat O ring. So I cleaned out my carbs, (quite a bit of residue), and replaced the O rings on both carbs to insure a good fit.
After reassembling everything back together, I started it up, and after about a minute of idling it started to sputter and sounded like it was running on one cylinder! Sure enough the left side header was roasting hot, and the right side one was relatively cool. After this, gas started pouring out (much faster than it had before) from my carburetor vent hose, and out my right hand side carb when the petcock was turned to "on". >:( I took out my plugs and the right hand one had been just grazed by the piston, and had to be re-bent. After that I swapped the plugs around, and still only the left hand cylinder was firing.
I purchased new plugs, and turns out now the left hand cylinder is firing and not the right.
I don't know what is going wrong here, I thought I had fixed the problem with new O rings, but it seems I've only made it worse. Any suggestions? I really don't want to part with the bike, but damn, this is getting very tiresome.
Thanks, Noah
you goofed up something while rebuilding the carbs and made one problem mutate into another.
try doing the carbs again and use the manual this time.
Did you accidently pull the spark plug wire out of the coil. This happend to me one time and had the same issue gas leaking out of one carb and running on one cylinder. Make sure you check your oil for gas.
