Title: Trying Michelin Pilot Activ's
Post by: Ron888 on February 08, 2015, 09:16:27 PM
Just a quick opinion on these tires, in comparison to pirelli sport demons. I love the grip of the pirellis but the very high wear and odd handling while leaned right over were driving me nuts so i decided to try something else.

Now,i should say i got these secondhand so dont read a *whole* into it.The front was pretty much new,the rear half worn (it still has a good profile).
FYI Front is the correct size while the rear 130/80 is slightly taller than stock. There is no correct profile rear for the gs500 in this model tire.

The front i loved almost instantly! It grips almost the same as the pirelli sport demon and has basically no bad points. The weird characteristic of the GS500 of losing steering feel/control when leaned right over was helped with this tire. It's definitely a little better than the sport demon in this regard.
I've only managed to make it slip when pushing so hard around corners that the rear is sliding/gripping/sliding/gripping, and the front slips *just a hint* sometimes in sympathy
Basically it's a great tire - one that i might stay with regardless what i put on the back.I have a new favorite  :-)

The rear is very different! It seems to have ample grip when upright but it can easily be made to slide under power in first gear when leaned over!In fact it's controllable and kind of fun.I've been doing it every chance i can haha
It will also step out controllably a little under power in faster corners.
I've tried doing some corners at really high speeds under power and in this case the tire slips/grips/slips/grips.Bascially it's doing its own thing because the engine power isnt enough to do a safe power slide. It felt bad but didnt get exponentially worse or anything.
FWIW ,while this was a secondhand tire the edges were like new so i'm guessing these characteristics might be the same even in a new tire.
Overall i like it.It's only flaw is fun to work around.Assuming it lasts much longer than the sport demon (it should) then i might buy another

you can get the GS500 to power slide. or even do rolling burnouts. all you need is an extra tire to get home on. and lots of Crisco!  :cookoo:

[disclaimer, do not try this at home, or anywhere.]
