Title: 140/80 or 130/70 stock?
Post by: Codoloco on February 15, 2015, 03:26:51 PM
I'm trying to figure out which one I want to get but I'm just wondering if the 140 would decrease the handling?  Currently I have 110/80 and 130/70 and it feels good.  I'm buying new tires though and if it makes no difference I wouldn't mind a little bit of a bigger tire in the back.  Has anyone tried either or and is there a difference?

Yes there is a difference...one is the correct size and the other is the wrong size.

Do you buy the wrong size sneakers?   Wrong size underwear?

Just sayin'

Seriously...lots of tire info if you search this site...

Dr. Jack has done them all, and has many comments on that subject....

Generally...but this may be opinion....too large of a tire degrades handling....

If you are looking to make a "fashion statement" then go for it...

Trouble is, nobody is going to notice, or give a hoot either...

Oh...and "another tire thread"???   to go with the "another oil thread" and the another sprocket thread...and the ....just kidding...lol

Lol... Well it's definitely not for a fashion statement because I asked if it was going to decrease handling and that's all I'm really worried about.  I did actually PM GS jack because I remember he said that he tried both of them but I was more wondering if the 140 decreased the handling.  I'm reading many different posts and articles online and I see a lot of different stuff but I guess if I stay stock then I'll have no problems.  Nobody should feel there gonna get flamed for asking a question.  I did like the underware and sneaker part though lol true.  I do realize that too big of a tire will decrease handling but was only wondering if the 140/80 would, not necessarily anything bigger.
I like this site a lot, lots of great info.  I was just thinking a little bit bigger because of my height. The 500cc is cheap on insurance here anything bigger like a 600 and up kind of gets pricey but that's a different story.  That's why im loving this gs

140/80 will make the bike sit taller. As it is a taller tire.

I have a 140/70-17 it will not effect handling noticeably for better or worse. Just looks a little "cooler" and a 140 might make the bike a bit more stable on the highway if you get a flatter tire profile.

but again, it might not change the way the bike handles at all.

I find that the larger 140/80 and 150/70 tires both give better handling than stock ones due to the steeper rake provided by their larger diameters.  The 140/80 and 130/70 tires both have a 3.5" preferred rim width giving them equally good profiles.  I like the 140/80 and 150/70 tires on the GS.

Tires I've run on my GSs on stock rims:

Yo....don't take me too seriously...just having some fun...nothing personal..

For many people, modifying their motorcycle is a creative/artistic outlet...this is a good thing...

If you search the Internet, you will find thousands, if not millions of "customized" motorcycles.  Everybody likes to put that personal touch in there!

If somebody thinks a fat tire on a GS500 "looks cool"...I say go for it, why not?

But when somebody starts trying to justify some modification based on some sort of never-proven "performance" increase...I just gotta laugh, and call them out on it.

Being a bicycle racer from the "old days"....I'm like my tires the way I like my women...skinny :thumb:

When the original bt45 tyres wore out on my bike. ..  after checking around on here I decided to go with new Sport Demons,  went to the tyre man and said 2 Sport Demons please.... he did his thing and away I went...  noticed straight away that the bike wanted to tip in a bit more quickly past about 20deg lean angle.. put it down to new rubber and 'sport' tyres. .. wasn't for maybe couple months that I even looked at the actual numbers on the rear. .  140/70 17 ... would have sworn it was a 130 till then! .. didn't look so much different really apart from obvious tread pattern..  8k km later and the rear is badly chicken stripped to the point I need a new rear for rego, while the outer 30mm on both sides has maybe 70% tread? ..
Sadly my twisty riding has been minimal while the freeways have been a lot!

But yes the feel of extra and smoother tip in I noticed.... from new rounder profile tyre (old one was chickened too) ... or from 140/70 section tyre??!?

New tyre going on soon is a Duro something or other..  much more of commuter tyre,  cheaper by 45bucks, harder rubber and supposedly much better longevity. .. I'll ride with it a little before I sell the bike. :( ...

See if the change in brand creates a different handling feel again...

What size? I don't know... the tyre man will sort that out!

Good info Jack, thanks!
Just for completeness, can you comment on your favorite size for the front?
I'm building a notebook of GS stuff for future ref, and your tire suggestions are tops on my list.

When they wore out, I replaced the Bridgestone's on my '09 with Pirelli Sport Demons and went 140 on the rear (based mostly from reviews of them on this site).  After 1000's of KMs on these I'd get them again, they handle noticeably better .. but I did notice they were a bit firmer.  But a great tire and no issues with the 140 whatsoever.  I also run Pirelli's on my CBR (Diablo's).
