Howdy folks, I just bought a gs500 with a "blown engine", looks like the bearing on a connecting rod went out (right one in pic). I have seen the engine rebuild thread, and just have a few more questions. It looks like i will definitely need a new rod, but I am wondering if my crankshaft will also need to be replaced, or if I could get by with taking it to a machine shop..

here you can see rod discoloration

shaft.. sorry for shitty image quality. out of all that i took this is the only one where you can kind of see what's going on.. looks like the bearing fused to the shaft a bit?
I have been riding and working on bikes for some time (i used to own one of these 500s a while back) but I have no experience rebuilding engines.. I got it cheap and have always wanted to have a go at it.. I figure if it doesnt work out, the frame alone would get my money back :).. Like I said, I have seen the engine rebuild thread, but would like a few more tips.. thanks fellas!
No point trying to get the crank ground, there are no undersize bearings available......either pattern or OEM.
Used crank is the way out but YOU MUST identify AND USE the correct size bearings, the procedure is in the manual.
Hi all , expensive cranks ( size control in la puente ) o.d. ground down , hard chrome , then o.d. ground to stock size , check e-bay sometimes new stock for less $$$
Does a rechrome and grind work out cheaper than the cost of a good used crank in your part of the world?
Where I am I could buy at least 5 good used ones maybe even with rods (£25-30 each) for the price of a journal repair (£150 min). In fact....... for 150 I could get a whole engine!

NOTE.....another one with a welded sprocket and broken front mount :D
harsh... I'll start looking for a used crank. Thanks!
Hi reeko236 , where are you located ?
Hi all buying a used engine , without being fully dissasembled , you do not know the condition of the crankshaft , not to mention paying for the shipping expense on the used engine , (if not local for you ) do google search on gs500 crankshaft , as I have found new oem stock for a great price from someone who had spare parts letting them go for a great price . p.s. that engine on e-bay in u.k. looks pretty tatty .
Hi Reeko236 , check your p.m.
Hi all , crankshaft on e-bay usa for $119.00 just checked hurry before it gets sold
looks like that $119 one has some wear on one of the bearing surfaces... not sure how well it would work out. any thoughts?
