last fall my 2 week old chain snapped on my bike while doing 70 down the highway. i didn't crash the bike(thank god) at first i thought the only thing broken besides the chain war the rear turn signal and maybe the front sprocket. well i never check the sprocket then cause i was just pissed about my new chain with less than a 1000 mile breaking on me and leaving me stranded 1-1/2 hours from home. i put put the bike up for the winter and now it's spring. pull the bike out to start working on it and find this.(see pictures) broken bottom of the sprocket cover and the piece of the engine where in bolted to. looks like i could replace the cover but it' only have 4 screws in it but the shifter rod looks like it may have bent a little. bike starts fine but i want opinions on what i should do about this.

I wouldn'tworry too much about the damage to the casing. I would buy a new cover on fleabay though. The bent gearshift rod is the most worrying. It might work but might cause the oil seal to leak all the time. I would try it and see before doing major surgery.
Ps what type of chain did you have?
Did the chain actually break or did a joining link come undone?

Pretty clear now it was a defective chain;most uncommon.
If u know the brand its what like bmf said...."what type".
Hope the gearshift rod seals remained intact.

Certain places you don't want to go cheap crap...
Parachutes, motorcycle chains.....etc...
Buy a "brand" name like D.I.D. or Regina....etc...(Both these are OEM for Suzuki)

i know the z link, o link racing chain, and x link chains are much tougher looking than the one you have there on the pic. I might be mistaken though...
It's unusual for this to happen. It could be a bad link from the factory.
Working on a few bikes, I'm not sure if you can just pull out the shifter rod on this bike, or not. I could do it on one of my bikes.
if you can't, no worries. If you can just pull it out, it'll be a matter of just replacing the rod.
I think adding some grease to the rod, it should just slide in.

Did the clutch pushrod survive?........No sign of it in the pics :dunno_black:
Replacing the pushrod and the shaft is no big deal but it does mean removing the clutch assembly.
the rod survived it was just removed when taking the picture.
It could also break when having a much smaller front sprocket, and a much larger reat sprocket. It would add tension to the chain.
also, if you don't have enough chain play, and/or haven't had the chain lubricated/greased in well enough, the tension on the link might cause friction, and heat, and ultimately, mechanical failure.
