Title: Torn on selling gs500
Post by: kbankovi on March 22, 2015, 03:55:09 PM
Hey guys, so I have a 2007 gs500f with 22k miles and Ive been the only owner. Ive never really sold anything on my own and im torn if I should sell it or not. On one hand I love riding and doing the work on it to keep it in tip top shape but on the other hand I have no one else to ride with, its basically become a commuter, and its getting up there in mileage plus I dont have my eye on my next bike. Thoughts, suggestions, ideas? Should I sit on it over the summer?

So you want to sell because you don't have anyone to ride with?

If you don't have anyone to ride with, you should look on local bike forums. There are multiple forums where I live in Louisiana that host rides. It's quite fun. Try to find one and make it to the meetup. You could also go to bike nights at various restaurants. You can meet lots of riding buddies there.

Thats a good idea never thought of that. Most of my friends have sold their bikes. Plus I wasnt sure how long I want to keep riding this one not knowing what I want to do next.

Is 22k a lot of miles for a bike? Most people Ive known sold their bikes under 10k.

22k is not much, GSJack has over 80k on 1 bike.
I managed to get 48k on 1 but it was a oil user from the time I got it with 8k. It was up to 300 a qt @ 48K, and as long as you keep it filled, it would have run forever.
Its useable for a long time if you keep an eye on some things.
Cool.

Yeah I just cleaned the carbs myself back in November so I should see how well I did ha. I like how simple it is to work on plus its been my first and only bike so Ive had a lot of memories on it And learned a lot. Maybe ill get it ready for spring from what feels like an ice age in NE ohio and see what my thoughts are then.

In my opinion, don't sell her.

At the end of the day it'll ultimately be your decision whether you want to sell it or not, but from what I've seen here, you've had a lot to say and it all seems like you're trying to talk yourself out of selling it and you want validation from the forum users.

The reasons you've presented for wanting to get rid of it, well, I don't understand them myself. You just sound a bit lonely and want some pals to ride with. You sound bored with how you ride her. Find some twisty routes and put the GS through its paces. It's amazing in the turns for its size. Get out of that commuter rut, if that's how you feel.

Personally, I think the bike is young in its life. It has a lot more to give, and having a bike is a fun and engaging hobby. If you do sell it, make sure you have something else to fill the time that you bike used to take up.

Thanks Iarn and yeah it's going to be a little more lonely this summer then previous ones. To be honest my wife left me last fall (it was only after 2 years but we were together for 5) and we always 2 up'd whenever we could.  The divorce is final at the beginning of April and over the last couple of months I've had a lot of time to reflect on what I want to do with my life and what's important and the bike has surfaced a few times. I get a chance to hit the reset button and with no kids I feel like I'm 23 again.  I had idle hands yesterday because I'm waiting on cabinet hardware for a liquor cabinet I'm building for my brother and sister-in-law so I got myself a new rear tire and started looking at other parts needed to get it ready. I think once the weather warms up and get out of the cabin fever that I'll get that itch back.  I also found an Akron Biker's meetup group so hopefully I get a chance to meet up with them

I agree with what has been said so far... look into upgrading things on it (if you haven't already) and as Iarn said, find some different roads and don't just look at it as a commuter  :-D

Believe me when I say I understand your statement about it being a more lonely summer this year... I won't go into detail but sometimes it is hard for me to look at my bike and not get sad remembering good memories that I can't get back... BUT I have also found that if I get out in the wind by myself (or even with the one other person I know with a bike that is willing to ride with me sometimes) it still feels awesome to ride and I find myself forgetting about my troubles for a bit.

Good luck with everything... I hope you find some buddies to ride with and you keep being a wonderful owner to that GS.

Bad day riding is still better than a good day at work!

Whatever you do, don't sell it at the end of the season.  Spring and early summer will net you the best return.  Fall brings out the bargain hunters (like me).  I don't think 22k on a 2007 in good cosmetic condition will scare anyone off.
