Hi there I was trying to replace my Tachometer cable for my 1998 Suzuki GS 500E when I got to the engine side the part just broke away now my question is... can this be repaired is it expensive ? can I run my bike without the cable and not lose fluid so forth picture attached !(http://s30.postimg.org/of6lbzswx/IMG_5946.jpg)
If I am not mistaken, all of the shiny bits in the engine will come out, an O-ring is really all that is holding that piece in. You will have to rotate the stub as it comes out, not sure what way? My GS had an electric tach :dunno_black:
I have a 1999 head on my 2005. Of course naturally I had to plug the hole...
I just went to ACE, and got a brass cap, that kinda fit.. [KINDA fit] use lots of red silicon... [as you can tell] and shoved it in there, finger tight, waited for the silicon to go off? [just read the back of the tube, its like an hour..?] and then TORQUED it in there like it was never gonna come out again.... [about 20 ft.lbs]

I think its number 17 on the list..
but its 22 dollars + shipping.
Does anyone know how to get the tach drive out of the engine cause I want my bike on the road again and it wont pass an mot with the oil leakin out the front I want to replace the tach drive with a new one and get the bike to its original status :) any help be appreciated check picks at top to see the tach drive
The mechanical gear that spins with the camshaft? With the head cover off, pry it out with a screwdriver. The hole will still need plugged though.
So that part round the tach drive that silver as hell can be taken out ??? Is it a washer or something ??? And a flat screw driver will do the job ????
Let's take a step back.... what is the problem again? You said you want the tach drive removed, but the threaded housing for the tach cable is leaking?
Maybe I'm just confused.....
The very first picture on this thread is my bike and the "tach drive" was broken when my brother tugged at the cable to get it off and he snapped the flat bit at the end of it now what I want to do is get the tach drive out "the cog bit sticking out the engine" and fit a new one in because I want it to pass an mot and have the rev counter working to its original state again.... am I making sense now...?
Ok. To get that gear out, you might be able to pull it with a set of pliers. I've always pushed them out from inside the engine with a screwdriver. There is a rubber oring I think on the gear, and I think there's another oring under the female threaded shroud that the cable attaches to. Check out a parts diagram to see what all is there:

The part of the broken piece that's still in the head should pull straight out it's only held in by the o-ring like Stevo said above but I pulled it out about 15 years ago on my 97 GS and that part wasn't broken and it was quite difficult to pull. Maybe if you can get a good grip on that flat tang on the end of the gears shaft you can get it out but you don't want to mess it up and have to replace the gear too.
Might be best to pull the valve cover and see if tou can drive it out from the inside like Rich said above and you would only need to replace the broken piece (part 17) and seals. See parts list, prices, and picture of assembly in the parts fiche:

I see Rich posted again while I was typing.
Yeah...the #18 Seal Band is all that's holding it in. And if the image of #16 is correct, you will have to rotate it a little CW as you pull it out.
