Title: Good price for stock exhaust? If so, I call dibs!
Post by: Lerxst on February 09, 2004, 09:44:11 PM
I saw this on ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=35596&item=2458365260#ebayphotohosting

Is this a good price for an OEM exhaust?  I'm going to have to pay $50 for shipping to Canada.  Total price to me $200CDN.

If this is good, I'll call dibs, unless someone else has already spoken up.

IMO, it's way too much....what's wrong with your exhaust? if it's a little rusty, just get it sandblasted and painted

Rusty and scraped up lots from a low-speed low-side.  Thanks for the heads-up.

What's a reasonable amount?  Any alternatives for a reasonable price?

most likely somone has one on the board they will sell you.

If I remember correctly, the spare one I sold went for 10 or 15 dollars on ebay, plus shipping which was actually more the the sale price.  I wouldn't pay more than 45 or 50 (American) delivered, and even that might be a little high.

This guy asks too much for his parts. Even the Ducati mufflers are a dime a dozen for stock cans.
I just saw an auction end at $9.99 for a stock GS exhaust. Not as clean as the one in this auction but well worth the price.
You should try getting a slipon, and just cut off the stock muffler.

If you know anyone parting with a stock or replacement exhaust system for sale, send them my way... Thanks.

I saw the Jardine system in the For Sale forum, but they won't ship to Canada.  :(

My current pipe works and I'm doing lots of cosmetic work this spring... so I'm looking for something close to cherry.  I just put a bid on the Jardine... we'll see what happens.

Yeah .. what they said ... I've seen complete, mint R1 stock systems go for $25 on eBay ... nobody wants em.  Don't forget that if you buy stuff from the US, you get tagged with duty on MC parts (at least I have been).

The price does seem a little high to me, but not too bad considering the condition.  "Perfect" used GS500 exhausts are rare - the only one I've seen on eBay sold for $75.  The new part from a dealer is insane.  ($350 or something?)

I wouldn't pay $100 + $50 shipping for one, but then I'm cheap.  If you want perfect, that one looks close and is a lot cheaper than new..  But I'd get an aftermarket exhaust and a jet kit.  ;)

So if I win the bid on the Jardine, I'll need a jet kit for it or just adjust the carbs?  I have zero experience with carbs...

Others would know better than me, but my understanding is you need to do some jet work on a carb if you put on an aftermarket exhaust.  A more freely flowing exhaust means more air through the engine and so demands a higher fuel flow rate than the stock jets with stock needle settings will provide.

See the "Vance & Hines Supersport Exhaust Installed" thread in here for some details.  Srinath said you should be able to get by without a kit, just with a 40 pilot and 125 main in each carb.  My bike with no jetting and no adjustments has a crappy idle; it runs lean.

Lerxst:

I may have erred earlier in maligning my gov't for surplus charges at the border (although they have their hand in my pocket the rest of the time!).

After re-reading my receipts, they actually only charged me the 15% taxes (GST & PST), as well as GST on the Brokerage fee.  The brokerage fee was the largest one at about $28CAN.  It seems there is no duty on MC parts. :thumb:

All the parts I've bought so far have been shipped through UPS.  I don't know what charges apply for US mail service.

As far as jetting the carbs. I suggest to put in 125 mains (stock are 122.5) and shim the needles with a small washer (see posts on this subject).  I wouldn't buy a jet kit because they are about $80-100 and you could get the jets and washers for about $10 from a dealer.

Considering the new revelation that $250 million has been misspent by our government, I consider an malignment justified.  :x
