Title: Magnet Epoxy and Magneto Gasket Questions
Post by: TXTrey on May 06, 2015, 11:23:33 AM
Hello Community,
My 2007 GS500 is my first bike, and this is my first post.  I've been babying my GS since I got it back in January.  It recently started leaking on the left side which usually gets on my shoe, and on longer trips it gets on the chain and into the rear tire well.  So, I'm in the process of replacing the magento gasket which seems to be the culprit (although there could be multiple leaks, but I guess I'll know after I finish the gasket replacement).  I've spent a couple hours searching the forums and can't find a clear answer to my issues:

1. The epoxy is missing off the side of one of my magnets and is starting to bubble on a couple others (red arrows).  After reading extensively about goats, I'm still not sure if I need to add epoxy to this magnet/re-epoxy the bubbled magnets or leave them alone.  IF I do need to add epoxy, what kind do you recommend?

2. Concerning the rubber grommet on the magento cover... should I put liquid gasket around the back of the grommet (red arrows on non-dry-gasket side) to help stop any leaks that may occur here?  It seems like a likely spot for a leak without a very good seal IMO.

1. You might want to just buy a new/used generator rotor that has the epoxy intact. I have not heard of anyone re-doing the epoxy. If you leave it, its likely to only get worse.

2. I would not use any liquid gasket. Is that where you think your leak is coming from?

I had mine opened up to repair a loose starter clutch last year and had a little epoxy missing from a magnet and just reused rotor as it was.  Really haven't put enough miles on it since to prove anything though, bike has 100k miles on it.  My rotor:

Thanks Bluesmudge... I know it was leaking around the gasket, but I'm not sure if anything was coming from around the grommet.  It just didn't seem like the best seal.  I'll put it back together dry and monitor it.

Thanks gsJack... Mine only has ~9k miles.  About how many miles have you put on it since you repaired the starter clutch?

Recorded 100.5k miles when I repaired it last spring and it has just over 1000 miles on it now.  Sadly, I've only put about 500 miles on it since the repair.  Spent most of last summer packing, moving, and unpacking but managed to get a couple rides in last August after my 82nd birthday to round out my 30 years of riding.

Started it up a couple weeks ago and it still sounds good and was sorely tempted to head down the driveway.   :icon_lol:  Hope to get a couple rides in this summer, old habbits are hard to break.
