Title: FS: K&L valve shim kit and valve tool
Post by: kyled25 on May 08, 2015, 07:27:08 PM

I sold my GS500F last week. Looking to sell my K&L valve shim kit and Suzuki valve tool. I used the kit once and three shims were replaced. Here are the shims in the kit.

I payed $180.64 for this. I want $100 shipped for it (United States only, sorry). Payment by paypal. Text me at 7084086277 for the quickest response. I will remove this ad once sold.

There was an issue with chinese shims breaking and destroying the motor. I think K&L even did a recall on it.
Look for those threads and see what the end conclusion was.
Cool.

Thanks for the input Buddha, I looked into the matter and read all the posts concerning what you mentioned. I'd rather throw these shims in the trash than risk ruining someones engine.... but I can't help but think that's not the case.

I searched all over the internet using "K&L, shims, broke, Chinese, broken, recall" etc., and the only results I could find were on gstwins and on a couple other forums where gs users (yourself, paragon) posted referring to the same incident on the gstwins forum. Seeing as how K&L makes shims for many applications I'd expect if their shims were junk most other bike forums would have at least one thread regarding this issue, but in reality it seems to be an isolated incident (specific lot#'s maybe?). I feel bad for the 3 gstwin users who had shims break and the ensuing engine problems they had, but I I think it's more likely a result of a bad batch of shims or incorrect installation.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be responsible for selling a defective product to anyone on this forum. I'm just trying to make a few bucks and save someone else money from buying new. FWIW I used this kit 2 years ago and sold the bike without any running issues or noises. If your not comfortable with my ad though go ahead an delete it and I'll just put it up on ebay.

No I wasn't talking about your sale. I was talking about your motor.
The GS is just about the only bike that uses a 29.5 shim. 80's Yamaha's are close. Maybe specific to the GS type. The smaller shims can get by with being cheezier. The GS has the largest shims I know of.
Cool.

I was asking around locally for shims that some shops might have for my GS. when I said the size most of the shops would tell me nothing has a shim that big and looked at me funny. I started carrying one around with me.  :flipoff:

Not to try to discourage anyone I just wanted to share my information.  I haven't heard anything about a recall but I did have a shim fly apart in my motor.  I've been working with Anthony from K&L Supply since Septermber of 2014 and still have not received any compensation.  He said this is the first claim he's ever had to do.  K&L do not make the shims themselves as evidenced by the "CRP Automotive" claim form that I had to fill out for them.  Anthony said that CRP had decided to pay my claim but he has not seen any compensation from them.  I did have to mail the remainder of my shims back to K&L for them to examine along with parts of the broken one.  I imagine since this happened all around the same time (I bought my shims around June 2014) that it was just a bad batch of 29.5mm shims.

Not to turn this into a K&L shim thread, we've about beaten that subject to death..  But yeah Andy, thats the same situation as mine. Still waiting on this mysterious "Money" that they agreed to pay me.
