Hello All,
I've had a GS500 K3 on a 2004 plate since 2010. I was knocked off it a couple of years ago, but luckily escaped with one broken wrist.
Anyway, I've finally got the bike roadworthy - I had one stanchion replaced and the other straightened by my local bike shop. The bike has passed it's MOT and is straight!
However, I'm having problems engaging the steering lock. I notice that there's more clearance on one side lock to lock. Is this normal for the GS500? I wonder if any could check this for me on their bike.
I can see that there's a stop on the headstock of the bike. I'm wondering if this could have been displaced slightly to the right of centre (right whilst looking forward sat on the bike).
I did ask the bike shop to check the steering lock worked and they confirmed this but it was over the phone.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Sorry, but I don't understand.
are you asking about locking the steering with the key for security?
Or are you asking about the stop points while turning the bar? - what I'm thinking
So it turns further in one direction then the other? and your sure the forks and bar are straight? Are you getting caught on a cable or wire going one way, keeping you from going all the way to the stop?
Yes, I mean that I'm unable to lock the bars with the ignition key by turning it to the lock position.
When you turn the handlebars fully to the left, there is more of a gap then when turning them to the right.
There are no cables fouling. It is a positive hard stop at either side.
And it worked just fine before? So you know the bars need to be all the way to the left and you have to push the key into the ignition while turning? Sorry, don't want to assume. . . :technical:
So will the ignition push down but the key won't turn all the way to lock? or the key turns all the way but the bars still spin? Be more specific
There is more of a gap where when turning left vs right?
Yes, I'm completely familiar with how the steering lock works.
It actually works fine if you turn the bars fully to the right, so I know it's not the ignition barrel that's stuck.
When you turn the bars to the left, the yoke and handlebars have more clearance between them and the tank vs the right hand side.
As I said in the first post, the bike has been to the shop for the forks sorting so I know that the forks are straight.
Previously the lock worked before the accident.
Forks might be straight. . But something isn't! ... I'd be turning the bars to the left engaging the lock as far as it WILL CURRENTLY move to... and investigate visually up close! And patiently!
If you can identify where it's catching. .. or not! .. take it back to the shop! . If they were paid to restore bike front end to pre accident condition. .. and now your steering lock doesn't work.. its on them!
