Title: avery_schwabs 1999 gs500!!
Post by: avery_schwab on May 20, 2015, 02:26:31 PM
So I am new to the forum and very excited about joining! long story short I started off when I turned 16 buying a non working moped off a guy for 50 bucks. I fixed her up and got her running. I fell in love with the feeling of being on two wheels for transportation. I've ridden dirt bikes and atvs most my life. but looking for more power and fun I looked into getting a motorcycle.  I ran across an ad  on craigslist for a 1999 gs 500 and was super excited. I ended up trading my four wheeler and 150 buck for it.  :thumb:

now I am currently in the process of registering the bike and getting signed up for my driving class(only 17 and cheaper insurance).

But back to the bike!!

accomplished so far
-cleaned and rejetted carbs
-new oil and oil filter
-a good bath and clean up
-new rear breaks

this is all the bike really needed as far as I could tell. any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!

things im planning on doing in the future
-new headlight
-windscreen
-speedometer assembly
-lower bars
-new blinkers and tail light
-bar end mirrors

if you guys know of any great products that associate with what id like to do please share!!

ill be adding to the forum as often as I can!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your story!  Congrats on the GS, it looks clean

Those bars look like maybe drag bars? Since you mentioned going with lower bars, are ya looking to go with something like clubmans or clip-ons?

Looking forward to see what headlight and windscreen you choose... keep the pics coming!

I'm not sure on the handle bars yet!  And I'm really looking for a street fighter look for the headlight and wind screen

Sounds like you're more interested in cosmetic changes than performance changes. If you want clubman bars you're going to have to a riser kit otherwise the bars will hit the top tree and be at a very uncomfortable angle. I recommend you upgrade the suspension before anything else. That's what makes the most noticeable change. Either progressives or race tech in the front and an R6 or Katana 600 in the back.

Update!!

Well guys I'm heading to the DMV tomorrow to acquire my class m temps. And I will FINALLY get to ride my bike  :D

But other than that I've done the fender eliminator to the back which is a huge improvement. I'm looking for handle bars and headlights/windscreens right now. Really going for a street fighter look.

Well there's my update! I might get into mototvlogging but its kind of up in the air...
I'll keep you posted! Thanks! :thumb:
