Hi all,
I am new to the site and have tried my best to look up this info but I'm having a bit of difficulty summing it all up. I have an 05' gs500 (naked), looking to help protect it from potential drops at a stop or slow speed.
Should I be looking for case guards or frame sliders? or will both do the trick?
Can you buy case guards for the gs500 anywhere? I haven't had any luck online or elsewhere. I like the look of the case guards better if I can find a set.
Lastly, I've seen frame sliders for the naked gs500 mounted close to the front of the frame, as well as above the cases. Is there a difference between the two?

case guards are better and will survive more drops then sliders.. sliders are held on with a lag bolt and a nut most of the time.. case guards have multiple mounting locations. that allows for more spread of the impact.
sliders will protect you as long as you buy quality sliders.

I am not sure if the first ones would work for your '05 (it says 89-04) so hopefully someone can chime in and help with that?
The second ones look pretty nice... Idk if this helps ya out at all... pretty pricey but anything is worth the money if ya really want it :D

I had the simple 2 point case guards on my 97 when it was "totalled" when I was clipped in the rear while turning off a highway. I high sided across the road and rolled a couple turns and looked back as I stopped and the bike was still spinning to a stop laying on it's left side. Engine was not touched and I put those same guards on my 02 for most of it's 100k miles. It was down a couple times once moving slow on a slippery street and was cut off and another time when parked and a high wind caught it's big shield. Again no engine damage. My guards:

Couldn't agree with ya more Iarn... this forum is awesome and we are so lucky it exists! I have read/heard that other bikes do NOT have a truly wonderful and informational forum like this to go along with it. Saw a guy slide a GSR750 last night on some gravel, had like 5/6" frame sliders on it reduced to bugger all, engine case was knackered, along with the lamp post that stopped him...
I had 3 point case guards on my '79 GS750L (the bike on the left and Suzuki's first attempt at a Cruiser) when I hit some gravel on an on ramp...I picked the bike up after the 30 Mph lowside and rode on.

Those 3 point case savers are known to be some of the best (protection wise) for the older GS bikes. I've never seen them for any of the Suzuki twins though....

someone had full cages made for the first SV650 about 3 years ago.. I think the problem with the Suzuki twins is there really isn't any "stunt" bikes made from them. unlike the 636s and the GSXR600s. where you can find cages almost anywhere.

The SW-Motech 3 point guards are still available for the GS500/E bikes shown in the wiki link above.

I was referring to the kind Suzuki Steve had on his GS750 above though. Here's a similar set (if I'm not mistaken) that are on eBay for an older GS550:

Renntec and Hepco & Becker also make 3 point engine guards. There is a seller on eBay that sells chrome engine guards. Apprently the Renntec guards can be installed under an F fairing.
My sliders break or bend every time the bike goes down. I think he 3 point guards could take a lot more abuse.
