Title: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: ShowBizWolf on June 17, 2015, 07:04:55 PM
Hi everybody.  Ok so if you are like me, you love scrolling through people's projects and pictures... ya love seeing ways they improvise when there is no pre-set way of doing something (or the pre-set way isn't good enough.)

I used to be on Cardomain quite frequently, years ago before they completely changed the whole format and that's where I'd post what I was working on when it came to my cars.  When they changed the format I said screw this and didn't feel like messing with it anymore.

What I am getting at is that I still would like to share what I am doing... to get feedback and also help other people see different ways of doing things.  I was wondering if anybody here would care enough to see or scroll through a car project thread?

I KNOW I know this is a BIKE forum but Idk... I'd personally love to see more of people's projects, no matter what they are (work around the house, cars, trucks, anything anybody works on).

Thanks for reading!

I'd say the Odds and Ends section is the place for it right now.... unless a mod adds another section for "other projects".

That being said, many other cycle forums I am on do have a devoted section for different projects. It might be good here as well.

That's a cool idea Rich, I didn't even think of adding a new section for other projects!

Yes for sure Odds and Ends section is the place for things like that right now... I was just wondering if people that visit here would even be interested in other projects besides bike stuff.  I know I would but I'm only one person  :icon_razz:

Thanks for the reply mennobike, I appreciate it!!   :D

4 days later, 40 views and only 2 replies... I kinda figured it would go this way and that's why I didn't waste time uploading pics and doing a whole project thread if nobody was interested.  :technical:

Guess we will just keep it to bikes and I will hafta get my other project kicks elsewhere  :icon_razz:

Booooooo Showbiz!

Seriously though, one of the reasons I post project threads is to have details online in case I need to go back and look at something. I say go for it..... the subscribers will follow.

What kind of car is it, anyway?

awwwww  :icon_sad: I wanted car projects! You could post a link, it would be easier to upload and those who wanted could still see it  :thumb:

Stop chatting and upload something. Someone's steel armchair can be inspiration for someone's else gs500 subframe :) Looking forward to see something happening in here

Thanks guys, I appreciate the encouragement

I agree with ya Rich, that's one of the things I loved about Cardomain... I joined back in 2005 I think and when I look back it is amazing to see all the steps I took and work I've done to my vehicles (especially since my old laptop died and all my pics were lost!!)  :technical:  Well... when the site was still formatted the same... now I can't see crap.

The car I'm working on now is my 1994 Spirit... yeah I know, nothing special, stupid sh*t box mid 90's car, dime a dozen, why put time and money into a car like that, I've heard all that before... but it was a gift from my uncle 10 years ago and it has tons of memories, a few awards and it has been SO much fun working on.  Plus it's technically a classic this year... hard to imagine!!!  :icon_eek:

I just got home from putting 7 good hours in at the garage and I am beat so tomorrow I will most likely start a thread, upload some pics and share the story of my '94 Evil Spirit  :icon_razz:

Damn. Most of us know that there is bigger value than monetary - it's sentimental and emotional one so put in this "stupid sh*t box" as much money and love work as you want and you got my blessing :D - on condition that you will share it on this thread ;P

I did start other project apart from my GS too but is way far from what we talk here lol (and inappropriate - "modern art" carving in wood - sculpture of male "bits" lol)

That's why I thought maybe I wouldn't get flogged here... how many times do we hear, "Oh it's just a GS500 at the end of the day" or "When are you gonna get a *real* bike??" from people?

Your other project... omg it would be cool if it were possible to share here... my degree is in art (so I am very familiar with nakeds and whatnot) and it would be awesome to see any art projects  :D

more pics.
of the car, not the pee pee.
although as long as it's not a photo of a model I think it's good for it's own thread. My wife made a very similar sculpture in college, in our apartment living room. That was when I bought my first shopvac

Cool little cars. Buddy of mine had one in high school. We ....uh.... beat on it a little bit. It didn't survive.....

Good on you for keeping it on the road!

Haha totally!! My cousin had the Spirit before I did and he beat the hell out of it... allllmost killed it haha.  It sat at my dad's garage for a year with transmission issues, busted oil pan, leaky gas tank, etc. but then I was in a position that I had to drive it in a pinch and I fell in love with it so the fixing began   I am at work so more about the car to come........

Where to start... ok so in addition to fixing everything mechanical on the car I wanted to do a crazy paint job. My original idea was to do a heavy metal and graffiti scheme over the whole car. I wanted it to look fun... like a party car... like it had been left at a rave or overnight in a crazy part of the city... but with a bit of hand painted artwork too.

The first scheme I did was green, gray and black with Wayne Static on the driver's side, Corey Taylor on the hood and all of Slipknot on the passenger side. Unfortunately, people started calling it the "Camo car" and I wondered, "How is lime green, gray and black camo?"

I obviously did not pick the right colors to get the graffiti idea across so I just eventually went crazy and used all kinds of colors.  I also changed the passenger side and painted Elizabeth Montgomery on it instead to really change it up.  Enough typing, here are some pics...

Started with this, 2005:

Did the first pant job, added my own aluminum and duraglas front and rear bumper mods and fit Vader side skirts for a Celica, clear signal lenses, exhaust tip, windshield banner, Motegi wheels painted green, etc:

Then did the second paint job, modified my bumpers and skirts, redid the exhaust, repainted the wheels, etc.
I also customized the interior and patched a few holes in the floor and frame at this point but we will get to that later:

I know it's crazy... some people hate it, some people love it.  I will add more soon!!  Thank you for looking

Whoa!

Any car with a beer tap for a shifter (?) is cool in my book.... Showbiz, you've done a ton of work on a car that most people look at as "disposable". For that, I applaud you!

I drive a pontiac 6000le from like '90 or something, so I sort of understand loving an old crappy car.

Awesome project, wish I had paint skills like that!
Title: Re: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: ShowBizWolf on June 23, 2015, 06:08:58 PM
Thanks so much Rich and mennobike!! Haha yes that's my Iron City tap that I managed to attach to the column shifter  :icon_razz:  And I am so glad there are people here that understand the '90's car love.  There was much of that on Cardomain with the Tempos, Shadows, the Topaz, etc  :icon_rolleyes:

I think I could sit here all night and not remember all the new parts and things done to this car over the past 10 years so I will try to list as many as I can...

-new gas tank, straps, fuel pump and float
-a new battery or two over the years
-larger exhaust pipe the whole way back (can't remember the exact size at this point)
-glasspack muffler (not a fart can, just enough to give it a lower note)
-new catalytic converter
-plugs, wires, valve cover gasket
-new a/c lines
-new front rotors
-Motegi 14" rims (kept the stock size for very affordable tires)
-Went through a set of Kelly Navigator Gold tires and they seemed to last forever! Now I have Cooper CS4 Touring tires on... 185/70/14, don't hear that size much anymore lol!
-brand new head and associated fun like water pump and timing belt with that when the head gasket went
-rebuilt transmission
-replaced torque converter
-new oil pan and gasket
-replacement heater box (something in mine collapsed/jammed and I couldn't slide the temperature control anymore)
-replaced the lens assembly that goes across the trunk lid (old one had a chunk taken out of it)
-took out the donut and threw in a full size spare and stock wheel (I commuted to school with this car for 4 years)
-new heater core and evaporator core
-new front axles
-originally replaced the stock shocks with KYB but they rattled like crazy, even after getting a second set (thinking the first was defective) so I went with Gabriel instead
-Moog cargo coil rear springs
-Strut tower bar/brace my dad and I made (couldn't find one for the Spirit R/T so we got creative)
-KYB struts
-Moog sway bar busings
-new motor mounts
-replaced passenger side automatic seat belt (remember those???) with OEM regular seat belt from an earlier year Spirit
-brake pedal cover from a Neon (has the Pentastar on it lol)
-original ignition wore out so had to get a new one of those
-new brake lines
-replaced the fuel filter at least once
-new rear bumper bar and bumper shocks
-new headlight lens assemblies (mine were of course that cloudy yellow)
-new ball joints
-replaced a rear tail light lens because I dropped one and broke it  :icon_rolleyes:
-replaced the thermostat a time or two

Most of these things were done with my dad showing me/teaching me but the bigger things (transmission rebuild, head, heater box, etc.) were sent to the professionals in that area.  My dad opened his garage back in 1972 and is still working hard... but he is getting older and doesn't want to tear into things like he used to lol!!!  Plus when most of these things needed fixing I needed the car back asap for commuting to college.

And if ya got through all that reading, thanks!  Here is a pic of under the hood from a while ago (more on the story of why I am working hard on the car right now again soon)...

Okay here's a bit about the interior.  For a while I kept it clean, nice and stock.  Gray with gray mats, woodgrain dash, totally normal looking.  Then when I did the really wild and colorful paint job I changed the whole interior.

When I was in college, there was this abandoned frat house I walked by almost every morning to get my coffee from the convenience store.  Every time I went past it I got this eerie feeling... I love abandoned and run-down places, they just catch my attention.  Anyway, I saw an opening in one of the basement windows and had my camera with me one day.  I (for whatever reason) thought it'd be cool to snap a few pics and see what the basement of this house looked like.  I know, crazy  :cookoo:

Below are the pics of what the house looked like, then the basement, and finally how I did the interior of the Spirit.  I pulled all the trim and painted it with blacklight paint, covered the dash, installed tiny strobes (LOL) and a blacklight tube hooked up to the dome light and my car became THE car to go out drinking and partying in with my friends (I was the designated driver a LOT that summer haha but I didn't mind)

Some dedicated work there showbiz!  .. haven't weighed into this thread so far due to internet issues at home and at random, most posts on phone and tapa. . Looking thru at lunchtime today though and liked your paintwork! .. then just after lunch spotted this in my work area... just a random dead car but the locals have prettier it up a bit!

Woah!!  Haha go figure the timing on that one eh??  Sad that it's a dead car  :icon_sad:

Thank you for the compliment on my paintwork!  :kiss3:  And for looking at this thread, I truly appreciate it.  My next post is going to show the steps I took to painting the Liz Montgomery portraits on the passenger side (I don't have any pics of the Wayne portraits in progress on the driver's side, they got lost years ago).  I can't post them while at work though because photobucket won't load on these computers  :technical: and it will be more than 4.

Home from work and now for more pics.  Here are some I took while painting Liz on the passenger side during the Spirit's last months being green, gray and black...

And when I sprayed all the colors... I did 3 of the portraits in skin tone and left one in gray and black. Each of the 4 portraits represent 2 seasons of Bewitched... the first 2 seasons were black and white (the left most portrait in gray and black) and the rest (6 seasons) were in color (skin tone and blue).

For everybody, more pics and story to come soon, thank you for lurking/looking/commenting

That's such a cool concept! What did you paint the initial portraits with?
Title: Re: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: ShowBizWolf on June 25, 2015, 09:43:13 AM
Many many thanks !!

I painted the portraits with a little jar of black "Odds n Ends" enamel paint that would dry very fast. I used that to my advantage... it made it easy to do shading/fading when the paint would get tacky as I was brushing it on. I also kept a little jar of thinner close by to help with making some of the shadowing and detailing a bit softer.

You said before you have a degree in art, correct?

Thank you thank you Rich I believe I was truly blessed with this crazy ability to copy what I see... don't ask me to sing or dance or cook but for some reason I have always been able to draw !!

Yes I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from IUP... I graduated in 2010  :D

Going to college and being "forced" to be creative... putting a timeline on a project... really turned me off to doing anything with my degree.  I learned that I do NOT want my paycheck to depend on how creative I am.  SO here I am, wearing a white lab coat, labeling blood at the Red Cross  :icon_rolleyes:  I love it though, and am at least proud that I got a degree.

You are something else ShowBizWolf - it's kind of complement here in UK :) True Renaissance person. Those 80's and early 90's cars are rarity here in most of Europe. Nice cars but usually dingy colours. You made your really funky. Admiring your art skills and hard work (I bet you enjoy it ;D)

Look like Norse runes, recognise the symbols.... pity I don't remember the meanings....

Hopefully beehave does... ;) ... runes have power and effects depending on how they are grouped... if you believe in runes anyway!... I haven't decided about them yet.

It was quick job and I use Norse equivalent of roman alphabet (googled it lol). One side says "pestilence" and there on other side "damnation" - expected "spelling" mistakes "burnt" with angle grinder. At the end I "aged" it with blowtorch and rubbed soil and food grade oil. Wood is of dying apple tree we had to cut down. I cannot upload photos of end effect for some reason.

Ok. Somehow I managed to push those photos through.
Next to the battle axe is my "tribal piercer. Couple years back I find crate of some rusted "ceremonial" swords in some charity shop run by Turkish guy. And I purchased couple. Their hilts were utterly useless (as rest of it lol) so I decided to use the infamous apple tree wood to make new one - aiming for tribalistic design and that's the outcome. And now isn't rusty and blunt anymore - nice hedges trimmer ;)
As you see - getting ready for zombie apocalypse lol. Don't buy me metal lathe because I will get idea to make double barrel "gunpowder projectile extractor" ;)

Hell - I thought that if you like pictures and projects - why not to show this baby dino I made for my son. It was creation of love. Struggled with it and used combination of tools - just mentioning jigsaw, grinder with sand paper discs attachment, dremel and old good elbow grease. At some point I had to buy rasps which really helped with process (yes - I didn't have them when I started). The dino suppose to have 3 horns (being Triceratops) but I found it against "health and safety" lol and I am not as advanced craftsman - yet:)

Not a phlebotomist, I work in the lab. I label blood, plasma and platelets (last step before it goes to be shipped out by Hospital Services), consolidate, pack and send out tubes to be tested and I also was recently trained to create/separate the double red donations. I actually really enjoy my job and hope I have it for many years!

PS, I hope other people will use this thread to share projects!! But at the very least, I have much more to share about the Spirit so at least there will be that!!

What's a double red?
Title: Re: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: ShowBizWolf on June 28, 2015, 07:36:22 PM
A double red is when a person donates enough blood at one time that we can split and get two units of blood out of it instead of just one  :D

Cool! ..that's a lot of blood!
Title: Re: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: ShowBizWolf on June 29, 2015, 08:59:02 AM
It is... I've never donated double reds but I have donated platelets. It truly amazes me that a machine can take blood out, separate the platelets and put the rest back into ya... and it's all to help others! I have learned a lot from this job.

Ok I have a lil bit of time here so more pics and story about my car. All was well, driving around day after day, no worries. One day back in July 2013 I was waiting to make a left turn, totally stopped. Lalala, waiting for traffic to go by and then whammo I was rear-ended. A chick in a Sebring smashed into the PT Cruiser that was behind me and pushed them into me. My only thought was, "...and that's the end of this car." I was a freaking mess.

Even with the huge list of things I had fixed and done for this car, I had always neglected the rear frame rails and bumper like an idiot. 3 years prior to this I had thrown some quick patches on the trunk floor and that was all... my life got crazy after that, new job, moved, moved again, and I never got to give it the attention it needed.

Knowing how bad the frame was in addition to the age of the car I knew it would take a miracle for the insurance company to not total it. I grabbed these pics shortly after it happened and it doesn't look too bad but I will upload the really awful ones later when I have more time...

I don't have much. But since you offered for people to share here as well, here is one I've had experience with.

Back when I was 16, I bought a Chrysler Galant for $1350, Chrysler imported Mitsubishi's into Australia back in the day. 1.6L aspirated, 4 speed manual, tidy little motor, 1976 model and had done 38,000 k's. Owned by a little old lady who drove it to church and to the shops once a week.

3 years later, at the ripe age of 19, I was driving home on a road I had travelled many times. Doing about 106km/h, when I saw a reddish-brown blur in front of the headlights. Too late. I cleaned up a red kangaroo at full clip. Drove the passenger side fender into the passenger door, which made my partner at the time quite distraught when she couldn't get out, broke the radiator in 4 different places, drove said radiator into the fan, seizing the engine.

The kangaroo was a lost cause, he definitely came off second best in the encounter. We ended up putting him out of his misery on the side of the road with help from a passerby.

First image of damage

Second image of damage
(http://i.imgur.com/DtRczpR.jpg)

Third and final image
(http://i.imgur.com/7JJcFDf.jpg)

It looked pretty bad, but the frame was still straight, and when we got everything unjammed, the engine turned over and it didn't look like we'd done any more damage than we could see. Repairs began in earnest. I sourced a replacement front end from a guy in town who had a straight wagon version of the car, but "the cook cooked the engine years ago." $250 bucks it was ours. We basically pulled all the front end body work off mine and welded the replacement front end in place. I didn't think at the time of taking pictures.

When it came time to respray the car, we took the paint code back into town to the local Holden (GM) dealership. We had them mix up the paint for us. Once it had started to mix correctly, the guy looked at me and said "I think I f%&ked it up, this doesn't look right." Looking into the tin, I could only laugh, pretty much spot on colour match. In all his 19 years working there, it was the most unusual colour request he'd ever had.

This is how it ended up, this photo was taken a couple of months after the repairs were done. A new radiator, new fan, and some elbow grease later, it was back rolling. It took a total of about a week to go from the top images to what you see above. They sure don't make them like they used to.

After I bought a new car, bringing out my inner bogan buying a 2006 Holden Commodore, my old man decided it would be funny to dump a 5.0L V8 into it, to see if it'd fit. Turns out it did.

They sure don't make them like they used to, you are too right! I love the car and the story, thank you for sharing!!! It reminds me of my first car which was a '75 Plymouth Valiant... same story, owned by a lil old lady and looked darn near perfect. I took great care of it for about 8 years and then sold it to the next (carefully chosen) owner so that I could buy my first bike  :icon_mrgreen:

And Rich... good eye, that's my Turtle Van behind the Spirit  ;)  Omg I know what you mean how could she not see where she was going??  The poor lady with the silver PT Cruiser that got sandwiched between me and the Sebring probably went home that day and her family said, "How many cars did you hit??" after seeing the variety of paint marks on her front bumper lololol taste the rainbow hahahaha  :icon_lol:

Well, there's over 200 pictures of the Honda. But here's a couple of my favoritrs. First, the "giraffe"  frame (the steering stem is the head, swingarm is the back legs, upper shock mounts are the front legs....):

(http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt70/rmyers104/68%20Honda%20CL175%20project/1004091410.jpg) (http://s598.photobucket.com/user/rmyers104/media/68%20Honda%20CL175%20project/1004091410.jpg.html)

The rat bike version.... which lasted a couple days:

After the ratty black, it started turning into a cafe bike:

The dash:

And the other finished picture I have..... I generally don't take pictures of a finished bike, sorry. There was a picture of it in Cafe Racer magazine though (that I can't find):

Here is a mini project.  I bought magnetic clasps, the kind that are used on purses and installed one on my helmet straps to replace the snap.

The magnet is nice and strong and I can stow the strap when I have gloves on super easily.  Tested it out on the road today and it works so nice.

So... I forgot to take photos of the disassembly but I'll link the instructions and guides that I used.

As of Thursday, I got all the way down to the actual bearings to be replaced and then it race wouldn't come out. I tried hammering and the inner race with ball bearings came shooting out (one which hit me in the "beans"). I'm going to try to cut the outer race out with my dremel tomorrow.

Photos when I get back to it!

Basically I'm in this situation:

I GOT THE BEARING OUT! HEHE!  :technical:
Now just gotta freeze the bearings and shove the new bearings in!

Just so this isn't a post without lovely photos, I've got a couple from MY "bike cave". I've been a self taught bicycle mechanic for about 7 years now. I find a lot of joy fixing up sad/abandoned bikes that just need a little love to be road worthy. I also try my best to get bikes running for those who need it most, low/no income folks and students.

It's a single speed fixed gear I'm building for a friend. Excuse the crappy lighting.

I use a neodymium magnet to hold the chain while I work on the rear wheel of the bike.

A friend crashed his CBR1000RR and now I'm helping him put it back in road worthy condition.  A great project to bond over and a good excuse to knock back a beer.  It is a great opportunity for him to get some experience in motorcycle repair and maintenance.  I might be witnessing the birth of a brand new baby grease monkey.

We stripped off the broken plastics, both sides were busted even though it was a low side the bike flipped over on the other side before coming to a rest.

Took an inventory of the busted parts.  Left handle bar, front brake hose, right air intake duct, support for speedometer, left peg and other little bits and things.

Used a paint pen to cover up some of the superficial scratches on the salvaged pieces.

Ordered the parts that would be necessary to start and test drive it and repaired the broken wires.  Charged the battery up.

Once the parts came in we installed the new handlebar, peg, speedo support and checked the fluid levels and then started the engine.  Victory!

Now the replacement plastics set and headlight are ordered and on their way. Excited!

I'm making a garage door opener for my GS.  This is a project for a Product Design class I'm taking so I get bonus credit for this one :)

I bought a keychain garage door opener and cracked the case open and measured the circuit board inside.  Using SolidWorks I drew the two halves of the housing and created a button that is hinged on a 1/16" diameter pin.  I purchased some pins, springs, and plastic screws from Amazon and McMaster.  Then I uploaded the models to Shapeways and ordered the housing halves in black plastic and the button in white plastic.

They are due to arrive on April 18th and I cannot wait!

If my words don't make sense thats because I have been working on this nonstop since 6:30pm (5.5 hours) and I think I blinked 4 times during that period.  I'm going to bed now.

That is cool.  What I want from the world is a website where you can very very simply design a 3D object like that and then have it manufactured.  Either 3D printed or cnc machined . Injection Moulded or such things. If you like the idea take it just make it so I can use it.  As long as it's cost effective for the end user.

Make moar for us!

That's definitely possible.  Once I get it and verify that it fits and works I can make some for you all.

I updated the design today to make it also compatible with Genie openers.

As it is the plastic bits cost about $45 when purchased from shapeways.  I might be able to make them cheaper if I can get access to the 3d printers at school.

lucas this is an awesome idea!!! I'd totally be interested in something like this too. My huge Craftsman/Sears garage door opener is just hanging off the clutch cable and I've always gotta remember to take it off when there's a chance of rain.

Which brings up a good question, will yours be waterproof ?

I also am worried about my current opener getting banged around and whatnot... I'm sure they aren't made for that (although they should be for what one costs  :icon_eek: )

I wish I had photos of my former opener. I had a BMW E36 I used to own that I had wired up my opener to a stock button in the car. If you can solder, it would be super easy to tape it up and hide it in a clever spot... say, head light cowling. Then have a button near your controls..... I might have a new project but I don't have a garage door! :D

I wonder if they make one that would work for my ancient opener... I believe it was installed the same year I was born  :icon_eek:

It has the 9 little switches inside that you pick a combination for and then duplicate the combination on the opener to program it...

I will have to do some searching !!

Have you considered replacing the bearing/rollers? (New project!  :D)

After the garage door opener was replaced with an already quiet shaft driven one,  replacing the rollers made a significant  difference.

Excuse the household mod geek. I don't even have a house!

Washing machine beating replacement was a success btw!

Okay so this isn't mechanical but it's a project I did so I thought maybe it'd fit in this thread.

This is the first thing I ever tried to knit. I chose to do a scarf because it's simple enough, you know? Four sides and such. I used the Knit, or Garland stitch for this scarf with size 5 bamboo wood knitting needles and acrylic yarn I bought at Walmart because I didn't want to invest too much in a new hobby.

This was my beginning at a local Paneras. It wasn't easy. I got stuck a lot and had to have my friend fix my mistakes, show me how to do the stitch over and over again and start the scarf it for me because I didn't know how to bind on (meaning start the beginning of the scarf with a closed end).

Finished scarf with loose thread ends that I never figured out how to deal with. I had a lot of issues with the sides of the scarf when I'd finish a row. It wasn't even and bugged me the entire time. I've fixed this in my 2nd scarf attempt though.

Cool!  With the extra bits on the end you should cut them down to about a 4 inch length and thread it back along the end of the scarf.  Kind of like sewing when you back up over your stitch to  lock it in.  That way it holds the free end securely and you don't have an ugly knot hanging off one corner.

this is real easy to do if you use a crochet hook.

Posting this actually motivated me to finally do this (or at least it reminded me that it needed done). I kinda learned how to do it with the crochet hook like you said, from the friend that taught me how to knit in the first place.  :) It seemed like she usually did it a different way, but seeing as I already handed her the crochet hook, she used that.

So, I guess there are different ways to do it.

That is cool.  What I want from the world is a website where you can very very simply design a 3D object like that and then have it manufactured.  Either 3D printed or cnc machined . Injection Moulded or such things. If you like the idea take it just make it so I can use it.  As long as it's cost effective for the end user.

It has never been easier.  There are free 3D programs like Autodesk 123D (http://www.123dapp.com/) which is really user friendly.  Once you are happy with the object you designed save it as a .STL, upload it to Shapeways.com and they'll print it and ship it to you.

Speaking of shapeways, two of the components are "in production" I'm so pumped I want it to be here now!

This is a pic of the progress of my 2nd scarf. For this scarf I am using the purl stitch and I am doing an English Selvege Edge to make the edges look more finished. I am also working on my tension still.

I lost my bamboo needles halfway through this scarf and had to get a new pair! It threw off my tension for a bit. I ended up unraveling a lot of what is seen here because of a tension issue I was having but I wanted to show my 2nd scarf progress.

Last week I learned that I could use the 3D printers at my school.  I printed some headlight brackets I had designed in Solidworks, here is what they look like in the computer (click for full resolution photos):

and here is what they look like on the bike.

They are in yellow because it was free and yellow is the color that was loaded into the printer.  It feels pretty solid but I'm going to see if a 3D printed plastic headlight bracket can withstand the violence of hanging off the front of a motorcycle after a good thrashing :)

lucas that is too awesome! I like it  :D

After I read a reply of yours in the *tries to remember* clipon thread that recently popped up, I was hoping at some point you'd post a pic of your bike with the handlebar setup I mentioned in that thread.

Outside of the obvious need to find different headlight brackets, did you have any other issues with mounting the bars under the triple? How hard is it on your wrists and back if at all?
Title: Re: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: lucas on April 19, 2016, 03:40:48 PM
Besides the headlight bracket there are some other minor issues.

My brake line is now about 1.5 or 2 inches too long.  I am planning on going to a shop and having a stainless steel brake line made.  Until then there isn't really a problem, it just looks dumb having extra brake line flapping in the wind.

Similar situation with the clutch cable and choke cable.  I deleted my choke cable and just made a loop that hangs off the carbs... Hard to explain.  Let me see if I have pics.

There we go.  I cut the cable and used a ferrule to make a loop.  I threw a magnet on the loop so that it will tuck against the frame while I'm not using it.

I did a similar thing for the seat release

What was I taking about? Oh yeah the clip ons!

The handlebars do vibrate.  More and less depending on the speed and rpms.  I wear gloves while I ride so it doesn't bother me very much.  I am thinking of ways to dampen the vibration though because I would rather they not vibrate as much as they do.

The pressure on the hands and on the back is about the same as a sport bike.  I am a fan of riding bicycles with the drop handlebars and on those I like having a stretched out body position so I guess maybe I'm used to the additional pressure on the back n wrists.

For my body the hardest part of riding is the legs.  My lower legs get crampy after, I don't know, an hour of riding.  This has less to do with the bike and more to do with my circulation and flexibility... for example my legs fall asleep straight away of I sit cross-legged!

P.S. Went for a ride today and the headlight bracket is solid.

Since I found out that I can use the 3D printer at my school I've gone completely crazy designing stuff to print.  Here are some things I'm most excited about.

I made a clip for my girlfriend's backpack.  I bought the backpack from a sale at REI and I didn't notice that it was missing one half of the clip on the chest strap.  So this weekend I measured the remaining half and drew a clip to fit in it.  I added something that should hold the water tube of the camelbak.

For my backpack I made a thing that'll go on the shoulder strap and hold my water tube

Did you learn that in a design class? Textbook (hopefully PDF)? Just mad skillz?

Looks great, glad you're enjoying the tech!

Thanks, Lucas!

I'm sure that info will be useful to many!

My current internship requires me to build/modify 3D models on Solidworks. Simple drawings and features, nothing as intricate as yours. I was just curious to see what resources you had to gain these skills and I think you've done a wonderful job sharing.

Keep up the great work!

Ok so finally I am going to update this about my car. Work on it was slow during the winter but I managed to keep doing things here and there.

Got a brand new silver painted gas tank with lock rings and seals for $76 and put that on with new straps and stainless bolts. I know I took pictures of it installed but I had to get a new laptop recently and I think some of the more recent pictures got lost in the shuffle. I do have this one picture of the new tank though:

I had to go back to page 2 and 3 to see where I left off explaining things lol... anyway, when my car got hit, it did a lot of damage to what was left of the rusty frame.
Driver's side:

Passenger side:

I was able to get frame sections from an Acclaim, a new bumper bar for $40 and new bumper shocks for (I think) around $45 each. Soooo lucky they made a ton of these cars and parts like that can still be found. A friend of my dad's welded the new frame parts in for me... and then I did a ton of finishing work like sanding, filling, patching little places etc... then coated everything with primer and then truck bedliner.

The inside of the trunk... ugh it was awful. The lack of frame under my car + the rusted bumper shocks + the impact pushed everything up into my trunk. I honestly believe that if I hadn't swapped the donut for a full size spare long ago, this would have been much worse.

The guy (Dave) who welded in the new sections of frame, also did some fiberglass work in my trunk before he gave the car back to me. Pretty awesome of him to want to help me out and improvise so much with this project...

Then I spent time going over it and over it... sanding, adding more fiberglass here and there, cleaning, etc. This is how it looks so far with primer.

This past weekend I wanted to work on the back bumper... re-creating my flaring design from 2010. I *might* have been able to save what was on there after the wreck but... I decided to just scrap it all and start over. I felt confident I could do a better job this time anyway.

First thing I wanted to do was fill in the piece of trim or whatever that was missing. This had been gone since before I even got the car so it was time lol... I just used duraglas, sandpaper and a dremel:

I thought about it and studied it and got to a point where I was thinking holy crap how did I make this flaring for the bumper before? 6 years ago... I looked back at pictures and was like no that's awful I can do better. I decided to just work on the center part of the bumper for now and then wrap the sides around later.

I cut the pieces of aluminum, riveted them on (aluminum rivets too so no rust) and then fiberglassed the seams.

Then I sanded the fiberglass and used duraglas to smooth everything out. Pretty crude and bare-bones way of doing this but I like how it turns out.

Could show a bunch more pictures but you get the idea lol
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i312/HeavyMetalMopars/Spirit%20work/main%2012.jpg)

Then I wanted to sand all the old layers of paint off the rest of the bumper (leading up into the trunk) so I did that...

And then primed it and called it a day. Woooooot
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i312/HeavyMetalMopars/Spirit%20work/main%2017.jpg)

Next time I get down to the garage, I will work on the side pieces that wrap around the bumper and into the wheel wells. I can add more to this thread about other things I've done if anyone is interested... like the floor patches and the roof and whatnot... and of course, thank you for reading!!  :embarrassed:

Thank you so much lucas!!! I really appreciate it. I know the wild paint job and the fact that it's just a 22 year old Spirit doesn't do it for many people but I love my car and can honestly say it has a little bit of a following  :embarrassed:

Hupjai, thank you too for your kind words! Oh you have no idea how much of a blessing Dave was with his welding skills. Even though my dad's had his own (car) mechanic shop since 1972, he was never big into welding... that was my Pap but he passed away right when I finished high school so I never got to learn from him.

The first guy my dad found to help with my car ended up making things worse. He kept my car for a good 10 months and kept saying he was working on it... he was getting things done... and then we find out he just left it sit outside all winter and spring. He freaking lied.     :bs:

It was awful... that winter had gotten down below zero numerous times. The fuel lines rusted through... brake lines rusted... my battery was toast... little animals made nests inside... my cd player is dead... etc. So then we had to have it towed outta there and my dad got on the phone asking around who wanted to help... then we found Dave. He had it for about 3 or 4 months and then gave it back to me  :)

I am so so so so fortunate to have my dad's garage to work in. Air tools, lift, don't have to worry about how much of a mess I make lol... would never have been able to do the things I've done to my van and my car if it wasn't for that.

Great progress Biz!! Not really my style paintjob(just a bit too busy for me), but those Liz paintings are really fantastic! Amazing skill you have there. I can always appreciate someone pouring their heart and soul into any mechanical creature!! Keep up the great work

My biggest iron in the fire currently is swapping my 99 2.5rs with the complete drivetrain I pulled from my 2004 donor WRX. Just got to fire up the engine since swapping last weekend! I have loved this car for the 8 years I've owned it. Put all my knowledge to the test and modified it as best I could at the time. Intake, exhaust, headers, lighten crank pulley, reflashed ecu, yadda yadda. Time had come to stop messing with naturally aspirated setups and make my jump into the land of forced induction. Found a 2004 wrx donor for a great price just a few hours away and it was a done deal. Bought the donor, pulled my parts, sold the shell, and actually saw profit on my end! So all my extra I had saved was invested(still a better term then "spent" "squandered" "wasted") into suspension and a few power mods. Started the swap last January when I broke my leg on the slopes. It's taken tons of time, effort, research, cussing, and a fair amount of my play cash. Wouldn't change a thing though, I've learned too much to turn back now! It's been a great experience, but I'm ready to feel her back on the road

steezin thank you for your support and compliments!! Yeah belieeevvvee me I've gotten mixed reactions to the graffiti paint job... it certainly isn't for everybody but I like the look of graffiti and just kinda went crazy with it. Some people hate it, some people love it, some people don't care lol... but anyone that can find something they like about my car, I really do appreciate!

You my friend have an AWESOME project there!!! As I was reading I'm sure my face did a  :icon_eek:

LOL! Yeah I've often though about my cats hanging out with me at my dad's garage... but omg they would get SO dirty/dusty/oily and that would be very bad.  :nono:

Hoping to get to the garage this weekend to work on one or both sides of the bumper finally... had a huge motorcycle rally in my town this past weekend (Thunder in the Valley) so that's where I was Sat and Sun and the weekend before that I was painting the foundation on my house  :D

I should put up some pictures of that because it was really really needing done... huge difference now! But I can't do it here at work because these computers won't load imgur or photobucket so poop on that :icon_confused:

Pic's are needed for sure! House painting though... ugh... no thanks! We have a brick house just so I don't have to paint the outside! Hahhaa

I did have to paint the gutters a few years ago though... never again!

Oh I hear ya about house painting... inside the house? Forget it I am dreading having to do that eventually. Right before I bought the house, every room was painted so I've got years to wait for that  :thumb:

My house is brick too!!! But there's a bit of the foundation that shows so that's the part I've been tending to. Need to get my butt on the computer when I'm at home (instead of just when I'm here at work haha) and upload those pics so you can see what I mean. I didn't mind painting the foundation tbh... I was careful for sure but it's not as precise as inside the house  ;)

Yes, pic's are a must!!! You do want us to believe you right?  :icon_razz:

We had to paint the inside when we bought this house... the colours were... interesting... mustard coloured architraves, walls that looked like they were supposed to be white but had been smoked in for 20 years... but that was actually the colour... yellow architraves and window sills in the bedrooms... lilac in the entrance hall...  :technical:

Mind you it all helped keep the price down  ;)

I hate house painting.... so much so that my wife knows I won't do it. I'll move furniture, put down drop cloth, help with tape, etc..... but won't pick up a roller.

In other news, here's my latest project and reason I haven't  been posting much:

Found on Craigslist for $600. Starts, stops, and runs, but it needs some work before it becomes "reliable". 150cc's of Chinese fury.....haha.

Oh.... it's a hoot. This model is really the base model for all 150 buggies - so there are plenty of upgrades to do. Suspension, intake, exhaust, roof, etc, etc. But the good news about that is I can upgrade what I want when I want. The shocks are literally just springs (no damping) and the seats are rock hard...... so that and seat belts are near the top of the list.

Oh good job! That's looking awesome  :thumb: Really suits with the colour of the brick.

I love that velcro screen door on the garage too, that's a fantastic idea!

Many many thanks pete !!!

I love my garage screen. All the pre-made ones I found had an opening down the middle with magnets so you could still go through it if you wanted to... well that isn't gonna stop my cats LOL so I had to make my own. I'm lucky to have the separate door to go through when the screen is up!

This house is really special to me because it was my pap and gram's house. It was built in 1959 and they were the only people to live there. It went up for sale when my gram had to go into a home back in 2010/2011ish... and then I was able to afford it in November of 2012!

My dad helped A LOT because when the house sold, the money was to be divided 3 ways between my uncle, dad, and aunt. My dad used part of his share to pay for the down payment and closing costs for me because he was SO happy the house would stay in the family... and he knew how OCD I am about things and that I would take really good care of it.

The inside is total time warp... but it has all been taken care of. I have an awesome mid-century house and I absolutely love it... I have been so blessed. If anybody wants to step back into the 60's, come on over LOL  :D

That's awesome! Glad you've been able to keep some family history in the family, that's pretty cool!

I wouldn't have minded my grandparents' place but unfortunately it was left to rot a bit and the land it's on was a bit out of our price range.

Finally done!!! Oh and I realize in these pics the color looks really really really red but it's less intense/darker in person I swear lol... I guess it's just what my ancient flip phone does to the color  :icon_rolleyes:  Now I can move on to scraping and repainting my garage door and window frames.

Since my porch steps are already pretty rough lookin I was thinking of getting that outdoor carpet turf stuff for them... gram used to have green on there and it got worn and ripped over the years... and I am not taking hundreds of dollars out of my savings right now to get new cement steps.

Yup very nice indeed!

Good idea on the stairs, although you could also just paint them green. If you want some extra traction maybe sprinkle some sand on as you paint...

Thank you all!!! I really appreciate it

Pete, yeah I could paint them green, you're right...!! but oh my if you saw them in person and how rough they look... cracks and chunks missing... you'd understand why I want to cover them since I don't want to spend all that money replacing them right now. They have indeed seen better days

Hupjai, sure thing! I will share how I made my garage screen. It took a bit, searching online and thinking it through... I wanted something that I could put up/take down in less than 5 minutes and also be able to fold it up and put it away.

My garage frame/opening is 9' x 7' and the largest size screen in a roll I could find was 6' tall. That would have certainly done the trick of keeping my cats inside... but would have left a foot gap at the top for bugs to come in. What I eventually bought was a 25' roll of 4' screen:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Saint-Gobain-ADFORS-48-in-x-25-ft-Charcoal-Fiberglass-Insect-Screen-FCS8559-M-FCS8559-M/100277433

I figured I would make two sections, each 4' tall and 9' wide. I'd put the top section up first and then overlap the bottom section about 8-10" in the center... not a full foot of overlap because I wanted to leave a few inches at the bottom to lay on the ground. I had some left over wooden trim pieces from something... idk what, I found them up in the rafters of the garage lol... two of them, each about 8' long. Really light but heavy enough to keep the screen down on the ground and deter the cats from trying to get under it.

Ok so now I had the screen and the measurements figured out but I had to decide how to attach it. Velcro of course  ;)  I bought over 20' of sticky back velcro from Walmart. I took strips of loop velcro and a staple gun and went carefully around the wooden frame of the garage opening. Both sides and the top, not the bottom cuz I can't staple velcro to cement  :icon_razz:

The section of screen that would go at the top of the garage frame I attached hook velcro to the left and right side as well as the top, with a regular desk stapler. Towards the bottom of both the left and right sides, where the bottom section of screen would overlap, I attached more loop velcro so the hook velcro on the bottom screen would attach to it. I know it's probably hard to follow so if you want pictures I can do that  :embarrassed:

The bottom section of screen, I only stapled hook velcro to the left and right sides. Where it overlaps in the middle part of the screen, I attach it to the top section of screen with a safety pin so it doesn't sag. Well it really doesn't sag much at all but I guess that's my ocd a bit lol.

So that's about it! I can fold up those two sections and put them away when I'm not using them... and the fiberglass screen is durable enough that it hasn't ripped or anything from me repeatedly putting the screen up and pulling it back down. Out of that roll I bought, I still have 7' left so if I had to make a new section, I could... just need more velcro  :icon_rolleyes:

Been working on my van for the past couple weeks... needed some exhaust work and I also put in a new dvd player... spent this past weekend cutting out rust and patching holes  :2guns:

Didn't take any pics tho because I'm just so disgusted... it sucks to live in one of the "Salt Belt" states  :technical:

Still have a long way to go before winter... have to rebuild the rocker panels on both sides.  :bs:

I'm gonna stop now or else this should be taken to the Rant Thread  :icon_rolleyes:

I can take a picture of the dvd player... and where I patched in the wheel well... my previously stated frustration is still there, but perhaps I can push it aside for a few pics  :icon_rolleyes:  :icon_razz:

This weekend I'll be working on the van more and if I remember, I'll take my camera and grab some pictures of the total absence of rocker on the passenger side. The driver's side has a band-aid patch on it that I threw on during the winter last year... I have to remove that and start fresh when I get to that side.

it sounds funny but during winter hit car washes often. told my uncle about this when he got rid of his olds cutlass ciera ( rust edition seriously. it was rust with 444 tires and an engine. and yoou COULD FLINTSTONE IT. he picked up an AWD chevvy astro. i told him about this, 6 years and no rust yet. ( also undercoating  , dont forget)

Before the clear coat (I paid a body shop to do) started to peel off of my van, I used to wash it pretty often... even though I didn't drive it much in the winter.  But now it's gotten the point where I'm letting it go until I finish my car... then I'll re-paint the van.

Only reason I'm tackling the rust on the van now is because I'm gonna drive it through this coming winter and I don't want it getting any worse. Don't know if the pennDOT trucks are still going to be using f*cking brine on the roads this year or not... I heard from somewhere they were going to stop but Idk if that's true.

Undercoating/truck bedliner is what I did the underneath of my car with (after patching the floors and repairing the frame, etc) so it should be good for a while. Plus I'm not driving it in the winter anymore (unless I really really need to someday) and it's gonna be kept in my garage so hooray for that !!

What a brilliant idea. I am going to rip that off promptly.

Even though I only talk about the GS most of the time on here I have got numerous other projects going on.

One we just finished was to replace our back door and window with a giant sliding glass door. The rear door was about two feet from a window and we knocked out the wall section (brick!) in between and then framed in a new 8 foot or so wide opening in place of the old door and window to put in a eight foot wide sliding glass door. I just finished the trim which came out beautifully. I'll try and get a picture this weekend. Now I am on to working on the deck, which is going to be about 16' x 38' with composite decking with a 22' x 12' pergola in the midst of it. That's going to be a big job, which my wife hopes I can finish before Thanksgiving. That's just a month away.

Then we are converting some upstairs space into a [personal] pub.

And then I have to completely remodel our master bath.

Lots of home projects. I sneak in an hour here, half an hour there on the GS. I've gotten a lot of other projects done while the GS has been in the shop.

I hate house painting.... so much so that my wife knows I won't do it. I'll move furniture, put down drop cloth, help with tape, etc..... but won't pick up a roller.

In other news, here's my latest project and reason I haven't  been posting much:

(http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt70/rmyers104/20160628_144249_zpsz8xru3wz.jpg) (http://s598.photobucket.com/user/rmyers104/media/20160628_144249_zpsz8xru3wz.jpg.html)

Found on Craigslist for $600. Starts, stops, and runs, but it needs some work before it becomes "reliable". 150cc's of Chinese fury.....haha.

I'd like to invest in something like this for my son. His 5th birthday is coming up in May, and I think a go kart would make an awesome gift to get him started into driving/riding. He has a power wheels F150 now, that he has really outgrown this year. I definitely want a two seater, because I can't let him have all of the fun! Plus, I'm not sure that he'd be able to reach the pedals just yet.

Go for it! I tried doing as much research as possible before buying mine, but it's tough to keep track of Chinese buggies..... my Yerf Dog is considered "bottom of the barrel", but it was also one of the very first "yard karts". So in all fairness, they just weren't sure how to make them (and how they would be abused in real life).

There are 2 good forums for buggy stuff: buggymasters and buggynews. I need to update pictures on my buggy..... a good bit has changed, and will change even more over winter.

Yeah, bring on the photos! My nephew used to have a yerf dog that he sold to his neighbor for $100. Had I known his plan, I would've bought it from him. I've seen several on CL for about $300 that would be sufficient to get him started. I'll check out those forums and do some research before I get around to buying one.

Bumping my thread because this is what I created it for...

Worked on the Turtle Van this past week/weekend. Had to patch-- no, had to make a rocker panel for the driver's side and a side panel for it. When I originally bought the van and "created it" (8 years ago), I paid a body shop to fix the rust. Yeah... never again.

Anyhoo, I didn't take a LOT of progress pictures because I was needing to complete this in 4 days. Also didn't get to sand things as smooth and even as I wanted but what can ya do... I'm only one person :icon_rolleyes:

When I do body work (since I live in the rust belt) I use aluminum and fiberglass. I swear, things rust practically overnight here smh...

Also, if this looks primitive to you, that's because it is. My dad's garage is not a body shop. I don't have a metal brake, I use a cutting wheel to score the aluminum and then bend it with my hands or with a vice, I sand things with sanding discs or by hand... etc. But it gets the job done. Just takes a while lol!

Love seeing your work. :thumb:  How strong is that aluminum panel/fiberglass?  Like if you pushed on it would it flex, crack at the seam or is it pretty stout?
Title: Re: For people who like projects and pics...
Post by: ShowBizWolf on June 20, 2017, 11:55:08 AM
In the past when I was learning fiberglass etc and I'd make a mistake... have to remove it/undo it, I've had to hit it as hard as I could with a hammer, chisel, etc just to get it to crack. Sometimes that wouldn't be enough though so I'd sand it down instead. It's amazing what rivets and fiberglass can do. The aluminum will flex a little bit but no more than some regular car panels do, but only on big plain sections... not at the seams. I've learned to put some duraglas on the seams and over the rivets, sand that a bit and then fiberglass onto that.

Thanks for checking in guys!! :-*
