My last oil change I did synthetic and it ended up being pretty costly. It's due for another and I'm curious about your opinions on switching from synthetic to normal. I heard there used to be issues with leaking due to rubber expanding different with different oil. I've also heard this is not an issue in today's day and age. What are your thoughts? Anyone done this?
I ran Mobil 1 15W-50 full synthetic in my 97 GS for 50k miles then switched to Rotella T 15W-40 dino juice for the next 30k miles. No leakage problems and oil consumption was about the same.
The leakage problem was the other way around, putting synthetic in an engine that had been running dino juice. I switched to the Mobil full synthetic at about 50-60k miles on my CB750K and it leaked all over. Switched back and leaks stopped, don't think that problem is as bad now as it was back then.
Remember synthetic can run longer than normal oil. I run about double the book mileage when using synthetic. Around 12000km. And it still looks good when I drop it. Modern oils are way better than the oils when the gs was designed.

That deal with the rubber expanding goes back to the first generation of synth oils...it has been solved. Oils are now fully interchangeable, and compatible...just use the recommended grade, and type for your bike...
IMHO synth oils for the GS 500 is a simple waste of money...
What synth oils are good for...the GS don't have....it's an old design engine..
Go to walmart and buy Valvoline 10-40 motorcycle 4 stroke oil....$3.58

I tried Rotella T6 synthetic and while it was great for easy start ups, I found that the shifting got notchy fairly quickly, so I ended up swapping out the oil way before it was technically worn out.
After that, I switched to Rotella Triple T 15W-40 and with top-ups, don't really notice much degradation in shift quality over the oil change interval. I'm thinking about going back to T6 and topping up with a 15W/20W-50... hmm.
I use the Valvoline too... never had any issues with it... and it is affordable! :D
Use Valvoline 4 stroke.....Now at 48,000 miles since new! Not a peep! :woohoo:

I got 14000 miles no shim changes period , why am I wrong ? end of story .......... :thumb:
