Title: GS500 Rejet Issues
Post by: beanb142002 on July 03, 2015, 10:28:16 AM
After replacing the factory jets on my 2008 GS500F (17.5,60,130) I upped the sizes to (20,62.5,142.5).  I then adjusted the mixture screw about 2.75 turns out.

With choke on, it held revs between 3 and 3.5k for a good while but had tremendous exhaust smoke so I assumed a too rich mixture.  If you applied throttle it would rev up but the engine sounded terrible.  I have went back and forth with the mixture screw to no avail, including stock setting (2 turns out).

I then shimmed the needles with two washers each.  Nothing at first but it did hold about 3k revs for several seconds before idling down and going dead.

I am at a loss.  I have drained the battery trying to get this thing to work.

What else can I do?

If your bike is stock??
A 132.5 main is all the bigger you need and no washers

The bike is stock except for a K&N air filter.  I am running the engine with out the airbox on so it is easier to adjust the carbs until I get them right.

Mine is setup the same as another user on the forum except I have no success.

Not having an airbox changes the mixture, is your K&N a drop in? If so with or without the restrictor ring? Guess it doesn't matter cause it's not on the bike right now if I understand you correctly?

"I am running the engine with out the airbox on so it is easier to adjust the carbs until I get them right."   Without an airbox and the filter you plan on using you will never get the mixture right  :icon_idea:

So you are saying that because I do not have the airbox on I am getting too much air and thus the engine won't stay cranked for long?

It makes it lean, not from the airbox not being there but from the air filter not being there, nothing to do with staying cranked
