Title: my engine died :( help
Post by: system32 on July 13, 2015, 04:03:45 AM
hi. it would be great if anyone will me help me.
I've got 2004 gs500F.
a days ago i was riding and bike and it started to loosing power, seems like a fuel was ending, than i felt bike was vibrating,
i stopped the bike Rev it up and suddenly something in the engine spinned freely and engine died. i thought that crankshaft was spinning freely cause it was not look like starter.
than i tried to start bike with starter but as i said something was spinning quickly. than i tried to push start the bike , it started with low Rpm and when i opened throttle engine died.
than bring the bike home, removed left, right and top engine cover, everything is in its place. removed spark plugs and there is a compression in both cylinders (examined with finger). it has a strange sound when i am rotating engine with starter (like a scrape not a knock). engine is not starting.
any suggestions will be appreciated :)

Look up the video addidas guy did re goats.  If your rotor is loose it can give those symptoms and also lead to a flat battery.
Another idea , How does your battery test out? It it flat. Have you tested with a known good battery.

thanks for response. the first thing i had checked was rotor. its not loose, starter rotates engine with no problem.

Can you record the sound that you get when starting?

That sounds almost normal even it a bit dry sounding.
You said you have compression ?

Your valve shims are all good and in place ???? not one of them Chinese breakaway situations right ?

Spark ? Probably fine, since it runs at low rpm you said ...

Then that leaves - carbs. You should really make sure you have good compression and are tuning the motor over well with the starter ...

Let me read your pposts again and post back.

Cool.

What exactly does that mean ??? You were revving it ??? or were you trying to start it ??

Cool.

At first Ty for Helping
valve shims is its place, checked clearance and all of them is in specs. i cant exactly say quality of compression but as i guess its good.
it sounds dry cause at that moment i drained oil from engine for disassemble :)
when i stopped(because i felt vibration and leak of power) the bike, engine was running, than i revved it once and heard the sound if something become loose and crankshaft span freely.

Bad news: you took the engine apart before finding the problem. So you should put the engine back together, and do a proper compression test. Without those numbers, everybody is just guessing.

From what I've read, I would guess your engine was overheating from lack of oil.

no way. i was checking oil level frequently and it was in specs all the time.
before it happened i put a new oil and filter(5w40) and than after 200-300 mile my engine died :(

can i do a compression test without putting engine to the chases?

Did you put oil that had friction modifiers in?  If you used regular car oil... it's likely that it had friction modifiers which are not good for a wet clutch.  This will cause the clutch to slip and possible cause the free spinning situation you mentioned.

i am not sure but about friction modifier but it was the oil for bikes

Is it possible that you put the oil filter in backwards? That would restrict the oil flow and lead to noise and a seized engine.
It is a funny coincidence that you had trouble only 2-300km after an oil/filter change. Friction Modified oil would NOT cause a major malfunction, only clutch slip.

kinda hard to do that unless you punch hole in the metal.

Didn't somebody do exactly that before though? I think after an oil change, their oil light wouldn't turn off. And the filter being backwards was the problem....

lol i have just checked out and yes its in correct position and i think its impossible to put the filter backwards.  :D
