Hi. I have just replaced the tach' cable on my 99 ex and it is now really sluggish. It only starts to register when the engine has been running a couple of seconds and is very slow in general. The cable is greased ( lightly) and there are no sharp kinks in it. What have I done wrong here guys? Cheers jim.
I believe grease is not really the best option for lubing cables. I put regular lithium grease on my tach cable like 2 weeks ago, and it became extremely slow. I cleaned it out using wd40, and then put some used motor oil in it. Now it works perfectly :)
Replaced it with what.......a cheap sh** non oem part?
Problem could be the fact the inner cable is sitting to far into the socket in the tacho head and bottoming out. It puts pressure on the mechanism and causes it to tighten up. Symptoms are exactly what you describe
Check and make sure there are no broken pieces of cable in the tacho socket and try backing the locking collar off a few turns and see if things improve. If they do the inner cable is too long.

Whenever my tach cable did what you're describing, it was usually because it had worked itself loose. The next step was falling out of the head, with the resulting oil leaks and burned fingers trying to put it back into a hot motor.
Also you'll find this is a pretty friendly forum full of sane people. Seems to go with the territory with the GS, you don't buy a midsized twin sport tourer to prove how hard you are. You may want to pull your head in a bit.
related question: if i remove the tach and tach cable will i have to cap the cable connection on the engine? or will it be a problem w/leakage? thanks!
Yes, removing the cable from the engine will cause it to leak oil. Not a LOT of oil, but enough to make a mess (and it would be an entryway for dirt into the engine).
The thread pattern on the tach cable is the same as a certain sized oil pan drain plug from auto part stores. Find the thread pattern, get the plug, and then you have 2 options. First, drill a hole into the drain plug deep enough for the tach gear to spin freely. Second option: pull the head cover off the engine and remove the tach drive gear all together.
thanks rich!
