So. I have a 2001 gs 500 that I put work into just to find out that the cam caps are broken. Well, the caps must be purchased with the heads. That to me seems crazy. Would anyone go to a junk yard and get the caps or not? If so. Anyone wanna make a few bucks and help a rider out? My local yards do not carry gs 500 parts.

Its not crazy at all. The caps and journals are line bored as a set with the head in the factory. Its done this way to ensure accuracy between the running surfaces.
Start mixing and matching caps and you may have alignment problems and increase/decrease the clearances between the bearing surfaces which could cause premature wear and a drop in oil pressure.
Not something I would do but hey..........its your bike and your call :thumb:

Wow, how did that happen? I remember that this happened previously and we decided it was worth a try to find other caps and see if they are a decent fit, cam moves freely but that there is no free play perpendicular to cam (there is always tons of free play in the axis of the cam shaft) , if this checks out and you have decent oil pressure (a bad cam fit will lead to lower oil pressure) you *should* be ok.

I got a couple parts from these guys, they are close to me and seem to have a good inventory. http://ajcyclesalvage.com/
I actually sent them a message today before you posted that. They are in Philly correct? I live in Harrisburg area.
Unlikely any breaker will sell you caps separately from a head, think about it, if they take caps off a good head no one will ever want the head without the matching caps and it becomes worthless.
Best you will get is a full head, and even then they might not be willing to sell one separately if its on a good engine because............no one wants to buy a good engine without a head!
I think your best option is to find someone in the sale/wanted section who has lost a bottom end and is trying to get rid of what is now a scrap engine and who will sell you the full head.

That is what I thought about. So I will be able go find a head from A 95-02. I'll just have more work because if I get a new head with matching caps then I would just do the work and move the valves and all over.

If I'm not mistaken, you can use a newer head as well. Just need a new tachometer to match, right?
