Title: Rim painting?
Post by: anoopb on August 04, 2015, 07:40:52 AM
Hi! I'm anoopb. You might remember me from such posts as "Bent rim?!?" and "Mesh pants"

My bent rim dilemma may be solved thanks to user EdChen who is selling me a 2001 rim for $25. It's silver and my current rims are "bluish".

I like to think of them as "blue steel"

In an effort to keep doing things for my bike, I'd like to paint the back rim to "blue steel" before putting it on.

Anyone taken on such an endeavor? Is it the same old mantra of sand, sand some more, sand again and again, then paint a bunch of times?

Also, any ideas what that color that rim is? I'm almost certain it's got some blue in it.

thanks!

The easiest thing would be to buy a matching front rim to match the one you're getting from Ed. Barring that, you have a few options.... if you really want to paint the wheel, you have some work ahead of you. Removing the original paint by hand is a huge pita, so I wouldn't recommend that. Just get the paint able surface as clean as possible (using ddenatured alcohol) and paint it black over top of the original paint. Of course, you'll need a good clear coat over top of that as well.

The option I would personally look at is getting it powder coated. You'll need new wheel bearings, but a powder shop will strip the old paint and cover the wheel for usually around $75.

I would lean towards powder coating too... very durable and that's what ya want on a bike  :thumb:

I'm going to re-do my wheels this winter..

PLASTIDIP!   It's easy, forgiving, durable, whatever color you want...can peel it off and do it again another color...

You don't even have to take off the tires!   You can even do it with the wheel still on the bike!

Search you tube for "plastidip motorcycle wheels"...

I'm thinking RED to match some of the minor trim color on my bike...
