Title: replacing 2007 cylinder head with one from a 2001 engine. is it compatible?
Post by: halffttime on August 04, 2015, 04:18:31 PM
hello.

quick background. i've cafe'd a gs500 last year but unfortunately it's still a work in progress until now. anyways... i used to have an '01E but i messed up the engine so I bought a crashed 2007 bike and got a new engine from that.... however, the cylinder head on the 2007 engine has a broken bolt on each side on the cylinder head where the exhaust pipes bolt on, so that means throughout the 3-4 months i've had the motorcycle on the road these past year and a half, i've been riding with basically only 2/4 total exhaust bolts clamping the exhaust pipes into the cylinder head. i didn't realize this was a big problem until the bike acted acting up because of this...

cue to now.

so i'm trying to switch the 2007 cylinder head with the two broken bolts to the cylinder head from my previous engine, the 2001 gs500e... the cylinder head on that engine is good and has no broken bolts so the exhaust pipes can clamp on easily and accurately.

ps. we've tried extracting the broken bolts out with a vice grip, torching it and spraying it with lubricant, cutting a slit on the top of the broken bolt in an attempt to use a flat head to extract it.... all to no luck...

the only difference my friends and i have noticed between the two cylinder heads is the fact that the 2001 uses a mechanical tach as supposed to the 2007 which uses an electrical tach. also, there are very minor differences with the camshafts inside the cylinder head. is it compatible? anyone got a clue?

Well.. you'd have to plug the hole where the mechanical tach is driven from, which with some creativity shouldnt be too hard. The 2001 head wont have the air injection ports, which is also ok.. some people take those off anyway...

Other than that I think they should interchange.

Orr, take  the '07 head to your cruddy old, but trusty auto mechanic. If he's half useful in life, he'll be able to get those studs out with a bit of heat and some persuasion.

Here in WI we tend to be pretty crafty with removing corroded bolts and studs.. because EVERYTHING here is rusty.
