Title: Please help me figure out this oil leak
Post by: Toner on August 27, 2015, 12:48:51 PM
I think oil is leaking from behind the sprocket cover, not sure where.
I guess the shifter pin is a likely culprit but I really don't know.
I watched this video where a guys says a damaged seal inside where that shifter pin can cause a small leak:

Mine is a big leak though.
I checked my oil level and nothing registers on the stick.
My stand is covered in oil.

Last Sunday I took the sprocket off and cleaned this whole area with kerosene and wd40.
Maybe I dislodged something or maybe I scrubbed away some grime that was holding oil in somewhere.
Maybe I just didn't fasten the cover down properly?
Weird as it sounds, that funny nut just below the clutch pin seems like it could be it.

I've got nearly 2 litres of oil on the shelf and If I can figure this tonight out and plug the leak I'm going to put it in and drive to the store early tomorrow morning to get some more.
Really need my bike tomorrow.

How far away is the oil store?

Right now, your guess is as good as mine. Best thing to do IMO is clean ALL the oil off, wipe down the trouble area with some type of alcohol, and splash some baby powder around. After running the engine for a little bit, the source of the leak will be apparent.

cheers, I'll do that.
Will I dump the two litres I have in?

I don't think oil comes out much while it is stationary as otherwise I would expect more oil over the floor. There are wet patches around the stand feet but not large amount of oil.

Motor store is about 5 miles.

I've taken the sprocket off to look behind it. Is it ok to run the motor with it off in neutral?

Definitely want to put in some oil (preferably however much to get it to the full mark).

Edit: Yeah, you can leave the sprocket off and run it in neutral. However, the leak "might" need some pressure from the engine being under load. So you might need to actually ride the bike around the block or something.

Thanks Big Rich. It took about .7 of a litre to fill. Cleaned it up with nice alcohol but can't find any talc.
Gonna leave it until early tomorrow as it's late and I don't wan the neighbors hating me.

Looks like the same leak I am experiencing, but yours seems more severe.  I'm interested to find out what the issue is.  Haven't had time to really look at mine.

For the oil to collect in that area, in that amount its got to be the pushrod seal or the shaft seal.

I would change them both......... immediately, and when you do get the seals out make sure there is no damage to the lands.

Also check the breather on the top of the head isn't blocked. If it is, it could be crankcase pressure thats forcing the oil out.

@watcher, have a look at this video and see if you have the same problem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hARlBcTYDQo

I topped my oil up and drove to the shop to get some more oil and baby powder yesterday.

Been checking my bike periodically and there is no leak any more. Maybe I was pulling on the gear shift rod (is that it's name?) while cleaning around it at the weekend and it dislodged something which is now back in place.

@Sledge, are they seals I can replace myself or would I have to open the engine? Are the accessible by taking off the sprocket cover?

Is this one of them?

There are three seals in the area, clutch pushrod, gear selector and output shaft. All three can be changed without major engine work but it involves `picking out` the originals which can be tricky.

Specialist tools are available which will help....google for "oil seal removal tools" or if you are very careful you can use two self-tappers or woodscrews as in the pic. Just drive them into the seal and pull on them to work the old seal out, obviously you don't drive the screws in any further than you have to in case you damage what is behind them.

Drain the oil before you start. Make sure there is no damage on the shafts in the area the seal runs on, coat the replacements with plenty of oil and drive them back in keeping them square during the process, ideally with a piece of tube the same dia`.

I am not saying its the easiest thing to do...its not, you need some confidence and there is always a chance you could screw things up

If you don't feel up to it its not going to be an expensive job for a pro`
