Title: Drive shaft replacement?? what are my options????
Post by: roedvigmads on August 29, 2015, 08:53:25 AM
Hello Everyone :D
I have to replace my drive shaft in my Gs500e engine from 1993.:(
But is it possible to take the clutch side off, and replace the driveshaft while the engine is on the Motorcycle, or do I have to take the engine off the chassis and take the bottom of the engine of and replace it?
What are my options? :)
Thanks ;)

Driveshaft that the sprocket fits onto?

No...to replace that its engine out and major surgery and you will need a press to get the various gears and bearings off the old one and onto the new one.

Options:

Engine out and split, press parts off old shaft onto new and rebuild
Engine out and split, fit used parts that already have gears/bearings in place and rebuild
Fit a used replacement engine with good shaft.
Or...........Weld sprocket onto worn shaft and think about getting another bike..........or then selling it to someone who doesn't have clue what to look for when buying an old GS5  :D

Have a look thru Haynes/Clymer and decide if you are up to the job.
