Title: Bouncy speedometer at high speeds.
Post by: Jordonwiebe on September 14, 2015, 10:06:54 AM
Hey all, need help diagnosing an issue, I suspect it has something to do with the damping of the needle inside the speedo itself.

The issue is at high speeds (>80 km/h) my speedometer needle is very bouncy +/- 30 km/h at sometimes. The weird thing is when i let off the throttle and hold the clutch in to just coast the needle will become steady again. I'll try to get a video of this if i can. Seems to be affected by the vibrations. the tach isn't super steady either but its still readable for the most part.

Is there something inside the speedo I can adjust? or would it need a new speedo? Considering converting my whole gauge to a digital one as well like this http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Universal-LCD-Digital-Motorcycle-Odometer-Speedometer-Tachometer-Gauge-RPM-15000-/191588940752?hash=item2c9b973bd0&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Universal-LCD-Digital-Motorcycle-Odometer-Speedometer-Tachometer-Gauge-RPM-15000-/191588940752?hash=item2c9b973bd0&vxp=mtr)

I would try a new cable first........sounds like its snagging or winding up on itself.

Awesome. I'll try that. Thanks for the fast reply guys. What's your thoughts on the tach? Cable as well?

I'd lube both cables first may be all they need.

How do you lube the cable?

Cleaned and lubed the cable and my problem still persists.

I think since it works perfectly when I let it coast that the cable is functioning properly. Its bounces only when I introduce vibrations by revving. I can coast at 100km/h and the needle is steady as a rock, if i rev the engine with the clutch in I see it bounce up to 130 km/h and back down to 80 km/h.

any more suggestions? try a new speedo?

replace the cable, then report.

i had the same problem after my crash the cable got a super tiny bend in it and once i hit the right speed it would start bouncing but the second i grab that clutch and start to slow down it would stop like magic cable is like 15$ on amazon i think.

Thanks, this gives me reassurance so I don't waste money buying a new cable
