Title: a bad day indeed! UPDATE: a bad day that just got better!!!
Post by: dowdy80 on September 19, 2015, 05:16:00 AM
hey guys so today's the day, ive been working on my GS for over a year now and just as everything is coming to completion, im thinking to myself in about a month or so i will be riding my Beautiful GS, but no, not now, today i got caught speeding on my little 125 and was fined on the spot and have to take 3 points on my licence, and with already 3 points on my licence, i am now currently banned from driving for three years, and in all honesty i don't know how to feel about it, of course im deeply upset but more i feel lost :/ how can i cope with this, i need transport for work.

My two cents: - speeding is dangerous, but I'd be lying if I said I never did it myself.  Not so much on my bike, because I'm learning, but in my car definitely.  So - not sure where you are from, but in most jurisdictions you can fight the ticket.  If you don't have money to do that - you may be able to find free legal assistance/aid and failing that - you can represent yourself.  Depending on case load, they may take a guilty plea to a lesser charge (no points or less points).  Failing that, you can also make the case that you need the transportation for work - i.e. you aren't on a bus route, your job doesn't pay enough to take a cab etc. and ask if it is possible to only use the bike during working hours.  Best of luck and let us know what happens.

I'm terribly sorry to hear that. I get what you mean about feeling lost.

Most states don't require a license to drive a bike under 50 cc's. A scooter or something like the MB5 may be in your future.

Years ago, I got caught speeding two times in short succession...while I did not loose my license, I paid thousands in fines and insurance penalties...lesson learned..

Where I live, speeding and tailgating are the norm...Dangerous and stupid, and pointless.

I just drive the limit, in my car or bike...If you're behind me, and I'm not going fast enough for you...screw you...I don't care...not my problem...

My company car is equipped with GPS monitoring...100% of the time...If you are 10 MPH over the limit, you get only one warning...second time you get fired...no questions, no explanations...fired....One co worker already gone...

The game I like to play...some A- hole is riding my ass...so I pull over and let him pass, and speed away...Most of the time I catch up to the idiot at the next light...I look over, smile and wave....it's fun to watch them blow a gasket!

Seriously, speeding, weaving between lanes, tailgating, etc...will only take off a minute or two off of the average drive or commute...is it really worth it?

OK here's the thing...I make a conscious effort, and it's hard, to go the speed limit. Just down my street it is a major street and I marked 50kph,i go 50 and everyone else goes 65 or more.

It feels dangerous to me to not go with the flow of traffic, especially on a bike. But that I what I am doing for now.

As much as I hate lawyers you need to see one.

Most places have a rule/law that allows you to drive on a restricted license (I.E.: You can only drive to and from work).  Probably will be expensive but will allow you to keep you job.

take Alan's advice above. Read a forum thread elsewhere recently about a guy who lost his licence for smoking weed and the guys advised him about a "hardship license" which you can apply for and lets you drive to and from work:

Here is the thread if you want to read it:

first of all guys i just want to say a big thanks for your support and advice, but now i have sat my court hearing it turns out i can still ride! i managed to get off scott free, i questioned if the mobile speed camera had been serviced in the past 6 months, ( by fact its around as low as 17% of cameras get serviced every 6 months), my fine and penelty points were therefore invalid :D happy days!

That's brilliant Dowdy, good one!
I despair at 'hair-splitting' speeding fines. We all know that speeding a few k's over the limit is not inherently dangerous. It can be in some circumstances yes, but riding under the limit can be dangerous too.
It's all about the circumstances. Here in Victoria Australia we have speed cameras all over the place, you can be booked for going 3 kph over the limit, yet virtually no speedometers are accurate to 3kph,
the authorities admit this ridiculous anomaly, but they don't give a stuff. Families, careers, even lives have been lost because of this. Scenario...-caught 3k's over the limit (which speedo did not indicate correctly... lost points... lost licence... lost job... lost family... suicide? Those 3kph could be the straw that 'broke the camel's back'.
