Title: RPM Range?
Post by: stuckinthemiddle on September 28, 2015, 03:52:47 PM
Hey everyone i'm new here, but have been a member since 2003 (does that make me a senior member? hahaha) I bought my first GS500e back then - rode it for 2 years and sold it with the intention of getting an SV650, but it never materialized.  Apparently cash-in-hand wasn't my strong suite.  Flash forward to today (12 year later) and I have 3 kids, married and about to turn 40 so my wife let me get another GS500 which got delivered Saturday.

Now with that out of the way, I have a question.  What RPM do you guys shift and ride at under normal city driving.  My 70 Honda CB350 thrives around 5k RPM when just cruising around.  Is my GS a high revving machine by nature or does it have a lower powerband?

I typically keep the cruising RPMs between 3k and 7k, depending on the riding situation (heavy traffic, highway, local roads, etc). I don't think you'll find much power above 9k. For typical riding, I'll shift at about 7k, cruise at about 4-5k.

I find mine changes best between 5 to 6k, although i have 14 tooth front sprocket, it loves it.

Here's the one I had back in 03....can't believe I was able to find a pic.  I lived in Dahlonga GA when I owned this bike which is at the foothills of the Appalachian trail....lots of rides up those mountains!

I can't stop posting pics!  someone help me!

My 72 Yamaha DS7 that I no longer have (wanted a vintage Honda 4 stroke so I sold it).  250cc two stroke - Precursor to the RD250/350.  This thing was faster than my CB350 by a long shot.

Nice bikes!  What year is the new GS?  Silver frame plus oil cooler confuses me, but I do have an excuse, I'm new here. haha

Must be a retrofit from an 04+ bike, it does look like a stock part, and the rest of the bike has all the markings of an 02. Great looking bike! My bike's very similar,'01 with Race Tech front springs and an R6 shock too!

Good to see the little guy getting a good start in life. Also the Yamaha is a two stroke and the Honda a four stroke, so you would expect the 250 to be quicker.

Great photos.

Nice bikes!
Oil cooler is stock on GS500F's, but not on the nakeds, so maybe the engine was replaced sometime ago, or bike was crashed and plastics were thrashed, hence an 'E conversion'.

3,000 for a DS7 where you live??  I sold mine earlier this spring for 1,000.  I know I could have gotten more for it, but I wanted a quick sale.

The entire Dahlonega area is a motorcycle playground!! I lived in the Atlanta area for 15 years, north Gwinnett back when I had my first GS00, and I still miss riding on those roads!

It's been about 12 years when I was lived up there.  I was young and single and quite stupid. I never took the safety course (taking it this fall), rode with short sleeves and sometimes shorts, no gloves - basically no gear or training except for my helmet.  My main concern was looking cool for the college girls, but I guess that's the downfall of most young single men.    I would think that the 12 additional years on  this planet has made me a wiser man since I last straddled a motorcycle.
