Title: GS500 making rattling noises (video)
Post by: Lunarvr on October 04, 2015, 12:58:24 PM
Hi all!

I've just bought this GS500 from 2002 fix it up because it has some issues. First the sparkplugs didn't spark, but that's solved now! It was the pickup sensor which was broken.
Now I've got it running and I test drove it for two miles and I'm not happy with what I hear from the engine. It makes bad rattling noises, especially when I drive in low rpms and when I slowly drive away in gear. A video of this is below.

The rattling seems to come from the left cylinder, when I try to find the sound with a screwdriver, but I also here the noise on the right side of the engine.

I took of the valve cover and I checked everything down there. Everything seems fine... one of the four valves has a little too much valve clearance, but I don't think the noise will come from that. The chain tension feels okay in my opinion, even though this sounds a bit like the chain is clacking. The camshaft from the intake side has about 0,5 of a millimeter axial clearance

Below are two video's of what my engine sounds like!

I hope someone recognizes the sound and can help me in the right direction!

Thank you very much in advance guys!  :)

I'd measure the links in the cam chain to make sure it hasn't stretched past it's limit.
How loose is the loose valve? They normally tighten with age, not loosen.
You may want to take the side covers off and just have a look around, see if you see unusual wear any where.

And welcome to the Forum and the new GS. Is it your only bike?

Sounds like a loose starter clutch which rattles at idle up to 3-4k rpm and does not rattle above 3-4k rpm.  I'd start with left side cover and check starter clutch.

Hello all,

I'm sorry for my late reply! Thank you guys very much for replying :)

Yes, I am new here and no this is not my only bike! I bought this one just to repair and sell it to gain a little money and have something to do while I'm bored  :icon_mrgreen: :D

I've got another GS500 from 2002 in blue. It's in tremendous condition and I ride it everyday.

The valve has a clearance of 0.15mm which has to be somewhere between 0.03 and 0.08mm. It's not that shocking I guess?
Today I'm going to have a look at the bike. I'll keep you guys updated :)

Cheers!  :thumb:

Today I have been busy with the bike.

I haven't found the problem yet! I filtered the oil, Luckily I didn't find any bits of metal which could have come from the engine  :woohoo: (Like broken bearing shells or something)
I found a few little solid orange/brown pieces which have crumbled off the stator.

On the clutch side I didn't find anything weird. All the bolts are tightened.

I've also checked the side of the starter clutch, but I'm having a hard time trying to remove the stator. I removed the center bolt and then I made a spacer to fit inside the hole and used a bolt (m14x1,5?) to pull the stator/starter clutch off. But how much tension do I have to use until it breaks loose? I've used quite some power  :dunno_black:
Is this the right way to do it and do I have to use more power?

How did you go with that noise? Was it the starter clutch?
