ok an innuendo laced thread title, but i figure it works heck we had a fs/ft thread title of looking for head lol and another thread saying i cant find the hole so title fits lol. ANYHOO purpose of thread its kinda a guessing game too. what you do is list
1. list favorite childhood toy
2. list current electronic/s from childhood
3. list current ( at time of childhood) musicians you listened to. and see if someone can get close to year of birth or say " you were a child of the 70s" ill begin:
1. toy of childhood. ( METAL lawn darts)
2. electronics. i was around for the vhs betamax wars lol. found a couple workable machines at thrift store. :D, and have my intellivision since new, also a vintage working PONG machine.
Oh found one of these still in its original box.
A tandy 1100fd laptop. and yes it does work. ( borrowed a charger to test.)
birth of atari 2600 ( still have it operable lol 50+ games)
funny thing is EVERY GAME ATARI ever made and an emulator will fit on ONE cdr
3. musicians/groups: i vaguely remember the first rap songs lol. ( rappers delight?/sugarhill gang) i listened to multiple genres of music , including (country) merle haggard, don williams, didnt care much for willie nelson at time ( until duet with ray charles) CCR ( selling LPs and 8 tracks via tv ads) there was also tg sheppard in the country scene. youd say WTFH if you look at my music stash. quite ecclectic or eccentric lol . you know youre getting old when current music from childhood makes it to oldies station.
any guesses? (ill allow up to 10 years.)
Aaron
You're from the U.S., potentially from the southwest, and were born in thev1960s?
1. Adidas Tango
2. Dual CS 505 - NAD 3020 - KEF Coda
3. Rory Gallagher
No :) was born in 75. so most of this stuff we acquired between 79 and 85. ( best years of childhood imho)
Wow! Did you have an influence, an older brother?
naah. just dad :). he managed a camera shop in chicago. a salesman comes in drops off an atari 2600 ( to demo) we kept it. and acquired games over the years. forgot to mention the sinclair16 and commodore 64 lol. this ancient stuff still works because planned obsolescence i dont think was even a thought then. the metal lawn darts are 100% safe (as long as youre not UNDERNEATH them as they come down . lol :)
Aaron
Did you ever own a Six Million Dollar Man action figure with a bionic eye (a magnifying glass) and a bionic arm (spring loaded grip plus I-beam to grasp and throw)?
Friend of mine had that action figure! Envy envy! Bastard! Lol
1. Smash up Derby set
2. Intellivision console,! 64/128 with the 5.25" floppy drive, TRS80 repair project, 8x speed cdrom drive (fastest avail) in 286/16 IBM (mid teens)
3. Fleetwood mac, Blondie, Slim Dusty
And sorry Rally but apart from Gallagher name in fuzzy general I don't even know those things of yours
ahaha the 6 million dollar man. sh*t i forgot about that one. when i was younger my great aunt and uncle were AVID yard salers. they had a basement full of cool toys. ( pre ebay lol) they would let me pick something to take home to west chicago ( from their place in glenview) got that figure, an original gi joe in the wooden box with the pieces. still have those. ( in storage in home. have to remember where lol) and a don post stormtrooper helmet. ( that ones in basement somewhere.) one thing i REALLY wanted was this 3ft tall bodysnatcher statue. they would NOT let that one go. sadly theyre both passed on .. they left glenview IL for peoria az in 1994. while i was at MMI i lived 2 miles from their home. i visited often. that statue teased me lol. but id say son got it and whatever else . which is cool. sorry i did it again. almost jacked thread MY OWN THREAD lol. but dates, i THINK out of those items, the 6 million dollar man, is within my early childhood. or slightly before. the body snatcher predates me lol the don post helmet DEFINATELY within my lifetime albeit early. i KNOW gi joe predates me by a decade if not longer. man i wish i could have raided that house again. in 94 they had i think a 6 month long yardsale. cleared basement out lol. ( netted 600k) if they waited til ebay/online sales came into being WHOA. but seriously in that basement were toys from everyones childhood. well up to 1990 Or so. on a sidenote, been hunting a micro cassette recorder (royal memocalc) with a calculator. ( going to try to acquire it by may for fathers birthday) he had one of these and i think i broke it years back. been hunting G1 transformers. i lack optimus prime $$$ and megatron. and jetfire :) had these as a kid lol. frig ebay is PROUD of them. found a slightly yellowed jetfire on ebay for 40.
back on tech also looking for a sharp pocket computer pc-1430 i found one in a bargain box nearly 2 decades ago in a pawnshop. learned how to program basic. which got me into trouble in highschool. i figured out how to make graphing calculators drop repeated f bombs. can do this with modern era calcs too such as a ti84c lol. caught hell cause i did this to 10 of them. sci teacher was NOT amused. next day programmed one to say "all hail the ice queen" i spent rest of day in office lol.
Janx101: 1980
Yeah, I'm thinking janx was 80s, too
Steve Austin and the android version of Oscar Goldman both had their own action figures. Great stuff.
Nobody knows what an Adidas Tango is, or a NAD 3020?!
aye a HIGHLY rated Integrated home theatre/ stereo amplifier. but heck it had a 2 decade run lol :) its on my short list lol. :)
Aaron
It was the "must" amp of the time. The "must" bike was the Honda C50; those with a decent summer job could get a car, frequently a Citroen 2CV (and presumably, a progressive girlfriend that attended disarmament rallies).
80's?!? Aww shucks fellas I'm flattered! .. the things I listed were far back as I could easy remember. .. but I'm a 71 vintage! .. which is REALLY annoying sometimes.. t shirts with emblem/ logo in front, (you know like New York '95 or Pennzoil series' 75) ... '68 heaps, '69 sometimes, '70 yep seen them! ..... ..... '72 of course! Etc etc. ..
No feckin '71 anywhere or anything!! .. you see any then let me know! ... we can PayPal some sorta deal together!

theres a mono NAD sub amp back at the goodwill in the junk closet ive got to go pick up. works but was returned a humming noise ;) which i had demonstrated could be dealt with by crossing lines at 90deg. i mean for 3 bux geez. shielded cables work as well. course i had took home the monsters . my yam has 2 sub feeds (7.2) kinda want another 12" amped polk or ideally 2 of same thing. just not in any shape to do the subwoofer crawl atm. but this is on my wish list. as is that NAD. ( and a c50 lol). now hmm '71 lets see what i can find. ;)

Nad 3020 LOL yea, I had a 3090, awesome amp. I had a burned solder trace in it. I wire jumpered the thing and got it working. Its a little bit of a POS internally, the main power amp board was single sided solder. You can easily peel off whole freaking sections off.
But I am a vintage audio nut.
No clue what adidas tango is.
Anyway I have owned Pioneer sx1250's X 3, Technics SA1000, still have an 800, B&W 802's, PCS8/FCM8 set, and 1000 other bits of one and newish audio, as well as fix lots and lots of em.
Cool.
Buddha.
The Adidas Tango is a ball, with a characteristic pattern, introduced at the 1978 World Cup and still around today.
The C50 has now been cloned in several places outside Japan, and is still putting along.
1970. The stuff I described was peaking from late 70s to mid 80s -- my childhood.
I'm from my childhood but I'm stuck here and I can never go back.
I must see the house of buddha :) will soon its within a days busride.
Im in retro lala land atm. jerry-rigged a record player FINALLY. its a book shelf stereo. had rca cables to feed speakers. those i fed into the multi input on the yam. the lp has a short in the dual volumes. so tape works until i can clean contacts. found my beatles LPs stones, and other stuff that predates me by a few years. buddha as seen the TEAC 3020 thats getting reconnected in a few days when left ankle calms down. that and its too heavy for me to reposition it without ankle collapsing. ive got a reel recording made from a radio broadcast (WIFI philadelphia) iirc late `67-71
only thing i dont have is an 8 track player. nu HUGE desire for this yet. until i make room in entertainment centre.
(6 slots) the Yam is the only thing there right now.(the RX V665). the electronics run the range from vintage to semi vintage to modern lol ( as does my music) in car years many of us are antiques +30 lol. meh i prefer classic lol
Aaron
Correction. a TEAC 2300 That was a find there a year agp the machine in like new shape and 60 tapes+ for 60.
swear it weighs close to 50lbs so i cant move it now :(.
found some LPs i had scored at work months back. one of which was called gold and platinum vol4 2LP set (thinking late 80s era or early 90s) moving feed on yam from multi input to audio so sub will get fed
SUCCESS ! albeit painful. i need to re arrange the audio gear. but that will be after ankle procedure. i have to get on hands and knees to switch inputs. which puts pressure on ankles. out of habit i step up with left. it reminded me not to do it again. ( should have worn the boot lol) anyhoo i digress.. i moved the phono to audio 1. the tv to av6 all is well :D the sub agrees lol.
anyhoo excuse me going to get lost in my childhood for a bit :)
Aaron
Current audio stuff spread everywhere:

1 Sony receiver
1 Tandberg receiver
1 Tandberg pre amp
1 Tandberg power amp
Sources:
Nowadays, digital!
1 Tandberg CDP
1 Rega Pkanar 3 turntable with RB300 tone arm and Shure cartridge
Tuners:
1 Technics
1 Dynaco FM3 valve tuner
Speakers:
1 pr Sony stage monitors
1 pr JBL
1 pr Acoustic Energy
1 pr Celestion
Phones:
1 AKG K44

There's also other stuff around. Life is messy.
Album im playing now predates me by a decade. (Beatles 65) anyhoo,
the equipment:
Reciever : Yamaha Rx v665
Speakers: JBL northridge ( 5 pieces 2 towers 2 sats, and a center.
Also a polk 12" amplified sub.
CDP as of now is my computer :) it feeds into the yam.
Tape: RTR TEAC 2300
Tape 2: a NICE technics full logic unit. ( yay goodwill lol. all but teac came from there. 25 bux total lol.) ( the Yam was free lol. yet perfect.)
Music: mostly digital
Desired: a decent USB turntable So i can play thru pc BUT i want to leave the inherent flaws of the LP intact. takes up far less space than the jerry rigged phono now :)
i use jerry rigged ( reference to ww2 germany) alot more polite vs afro engineered lol.
Kinda also desire a great standalone amp But Need to build a rack for the equipment. will wait until procedure tuesday, and following ankle surgery are complete.
May also Repurpose the free imac g4 into a media server. again yay goodwill lol.
Anyhoo back to thread :)
Aaron
lookin fwd to re arranging the jbls and running YPAO again.. dammit i think the jerry rigged phono s belt is stretching. :/ beatles dont sing in that octave lol
Now that I think about it I've also got several tape decks. Most noteworthy is the auto reverse Nakamichi as seen in the film "9 1/2 Weeks." Heh.

Yikes, I got lots of the same. Except my only Tandberg is a pair of Reel to Reel model 6 and 64.
The Technics su-v7 I believe I still have - I cant find it in my stowage.
I have Dynaco pas3 and st70.
I have 2 Yamaha Z9, 1 V1 ,1 dsp3090, dsp e700, a denon avr 1910 and 2807, Nak Pa7, 2 pairs of Carver amazings, EV sp12b, B&W 802 S2, B&W 603 s1, B&W PCS8/FCM8, pair of ESS amt 1b's, empty EV Georgians with all the components on boxes, tons more amps speakers etc etc.
Cool.
Buddha.

I picked one of these, fixed it and flipped a yr or 2 ago.
I am somehow not that impressed with these huge mechanisms that do all these and make espresso ... Somehow the espresso wand gets stuck in the cassette tape and all of it jams up and causes grief.
Cool.
Buddha,.
Definately visiting lol. Oh something i forgot originally. Tv Shows during childhood.:
lets see there was Mash in syndication as well as Lost in space.
the carol burnette show. hated it then i kinda laugh now lol.
the partridge family
the brady bunch
andy griffith show ( in syndication for ages lol)
all the game shows. i do remember us getting cable tv mid 80s. and the birth of MTV. ( *cough Max headroom lol*)
Oh and Soullllllll train ! lol
Aaron
QuoteNak Pa7,.... B&W 802 S2
Buddha,
In my view, a Nakamichi PA7 driving B&W 802s and fed by something era-appropriate, like, say, a Mission DAD CDP or for analog a Linn Sondek, Linn Itok, Linn Karma or better still an Oracle Delphi, all through a modular Meridian pre. is a late 1980s
reference system!
From that era few amps kept up with the PA7. The Luxman MO-5 comes to mind. Other amps were sweeter (Levinson ML2s) or weirder (Futterman H3aa Improved) but the current capabilities and clean sound combo was a real winner.
Those were the days.
As to the Technics, I've used them in everything from a teenager's bedroom (mine!) to... an actual disco. Unburnable with high efficiency speakers (for dance/pub use, the "in" speaker at the time was the Celestion Rock Box -- a 100 dB efficiency 10" woofer plus bullet tweeter that needed a grate in front of the bullet and the treble turned full down so nobody got their brains melted).
The Tandberg stuff is class. The receiver is Asian but the other 3000 series components are made in Norway, with Al chassis etc.
Your Carver Amazings are, well, amazing!
As to TV shows:
The Professionals. Lew Collins apparently discharged a shotgun in his living room in real life, and the show gave rise to a generation of guys that drove Ford Escorts wilder than Ari Vatanen on their way to the grocer's. Browning Hi Power, sideburns, explosions.
Magnum PI. The 308, the GMT-Master, the Pumas, the mustache, the Ocean Pacific scrotum shorts. You're a brave man if you leave the house like that today.
Rockford Files: $200 a day, plus expenses.
Battlestar Galactica: UFOlogy and xeno-theology for 10-year-olds.
Tales of the Golden Monkey: Poor kids' Indiana Jones. Bon Chance Louis. The evil princess. Shame about Stephen Collins but not the show's fault.
The Benny Hill Show. Nuff said. RIP.
Fawlty Towers: Basil for PM!
Not The Nine O'Clock News: a young Mr. Bean denounces Thatcherism.
Alexei Sayle's Stuff: an overweight Maoist Liverpudlian denounces... well... absolutely everything.
Oh cool forgot those lol ( cue up yakety sax Eh? lol)
Movies i was 2 when starwars came out, i Went to empire strikes back when it hit theatres, and theres ET. 1982 lol when drew barrymore was what 6?
Aaron
The Return/Revenge/Strikes Again Pink Panther sequels with Peter Sellers. Clouseau could wreck a city in moments. All the money.
Good stuff :)
I also remember the original star trek on tv. ohh the days lol.
Aaron
I was terrified of the Gorn who dueled Kirk unarmed on the mineral-rich planet (read: the usual spot out by the valley in SoCal...).
How about Hawaii 5-0?
Oh yeah hawaii 5-0. loved that show. can catch it sometimes on OTA tv
OTA TV is now fabulous because they show all that stuff!
think station is called Me-tv i dont see magnum pi tho. for the longest time i wanted ( still do) a ferrari 308. but if i get one at some point in the far future, will be a 77. ( its carbed) guy i go to church with has a ferrari 355 spyder.
beautiful car :)
Aaron
There's not just MeTV. Check out all the digital piggyback "extra" stations on 2, 4, 5, and 13. The latter plays 70s crime flicks too.
dont think ive access to those.
back to audio momentarily,
got 3 turntables the jerry rigged one, and the technics both have stretched belts and a fisher. for some reason it wont run. ( broken belt i assume)
the technics ill wait and get the proper belt for it.
but mcgyver and fisher i can use 1/4" wide by 6" rubber bands for a temp fix. can usually get a few hours out of this before they start to stretch. when they do this i remove them they go on to rubber band other things.
Tbh i hope to get a direct drive. but also want a usb turntable. would however have to get a pre amp. cause the yam does not have a phono input.
Aaron
Some fancy turntables use dental floss.
a slightly humorous observation. Catch an episode of the cooking show that Julia child (RIP)ran.
Youll notice shes stone cold sober at beginning. Always had a glass of wine nearby, at end of show shes two sheets to the wind. if i were to attempt cooking while drunk it would NOT be pretty lol
Aaron
Do you remember Graham Kerr? He seemed loaded on his cook shows too.
yup lol. would have been great to have the 2 of them together. later on in her life shed team up with jacues pepin. funny as hell because you could see it in hisface. OMG shes drunk yet again. towards the end of shows shed relegate herself to sous chef lol one hand on the glass and another on the knife. youd catch jacques glancing over often. a cooking show with comedy. maybe thats why it had the run it did.
Aaron
LMAO this is funny. watching an older sitcom whos cast of guest stars encompasses my childhood almost completely.
1: episode of loveboat
2: guest list ( kinda funny)
first theres john hillerman ( magnum PI)
then theres Larry Linville (mash)
Then theres That woman who played the rich guys wife on gilligans island
Then theres phyllis diller ( predates me but in syndication)
Then for the kicker: the Dallas cowboys cheerleaders.
Aaron
heres an addition. vehicles. or A vehicle
childhood thru now. what was or is your favorite that you had.?
Mine was my beloved birth control car.
a ford pinto 2 door wagon with a 2.3 and a manual. why birth control? 2 reasons
1 ford pinto lol
2 it was sky blue with that wood veneer stuff. it was FUGLY.
Birth control? because chances of getting any were minimal at best.
Aaron
best 50bux i ever spent lol
My GS500 of course! :thumb:
But 4 Wheels. .. Holden VR Ute with the 165kw injected V8. It was enough of everything without being ruinous on the wallet!
But of course ;). i had considered bikes in a separate category. the gs is at top of my list as well. :)
as a side note, the birth control car made me ALOT of money delivering pizza. one initial cost, bpaid for in 1 day of tips. profit from then on. :)
Aaron
a car i DO want besides the previously mentioned 308, is a pontiac gto ( the recent one) a rebadged holden monaro. these cars are evil fast. a powerful v8 a manual in a medium sized car.
Aaron
I want a 2CV Charleston in purple and black, a Ford Escort RS like Bodie and Doyle had, and for a sporting car I want a Lancia 037. This all means I'll need a Honda that runs to actually drive though.
For bikes I want a Hesketh Vampyre, a Honda VF1000R, and a Suzie RG500Γ. I'll need the GS500 because it actually runs.
For audio I want any digital source feeding ATC SCM300ASL monitors.
Also I want world peace. And a pizza.
Since im rather immobile i decided to dust off the video collection in my pc. i had found most of these either at youtube or elsewhere. ( cant list them) anyhoo found my bee gees concert ( vegas '97) a funny observation, 3 guys from the isle of man, singing a song about massachusetts in vegas. have this cranked up lol. 10 years ago, didnt care for the bee gees, mark knopfler (solo act) or gordon lightfoot. nowadays love em all. now mark knopfler as dire straits thats always been a likeable group for me.
Aaron
Brothers in Arms track on a good stereo with thumping low end response... always awesome!
Goodness you guys are young! You have to know that I was brought up in the UK, so a lot of these things will not mean anything, but here goes. From my childhood the things I remember are:
Two channel black and white tv
Four radio stations - 3 BBC, one commercial from Luxembourg
Ford Prefects and Morris Minors
Cliff Richard, the Shadows, Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney
and of course Dr Who.
I wonder how many of you have even heard of them? It's amazing how little we knew about other countries without the internet!
EDIT for correctness: There's no such thing as a Ford Perfect - it was a Ford Prefect. WWIT!!!
Morris minor :) theres one for sale at a local wrecker yard. i want that tiny thing lol. dr who = :icon_mrgreen: tell ya what, the net makes finding these things ALOT easier lol. research used to be snail mail and the library.
Aaron
Heard of all that stuff! :thumb: ... that means I'm old right? Lol :/
Yama ... don't forget the old library Google. . Aka microfiche!
Indeed. ive got them somewhere, will have to find them, but have the gs500e on fiche. the parts listings and schematics anyways. will have to locate. had it since early 2002. from school out west. the microfiche still comes in handy. may have to use it for research of my great grandfather. found his name in a census from early 1900s library has more info on microfiche. will look into it.
Aaron
Let's see:
Toy: Teddy Ruxpin! Dude, that was one creepy toy when it turned on by itself at night!
Electronic: Although, I don't have it now I loved my Commodor II. I also, still have my Atari 2600 and my Nintendo Entertainment System! Although, I play all of these on my homebrew PSP now! Love that sucker!
Music: Like a Virgin, Funkytown, Another one bites the dust
