Title: Fuel Lines - Gas permeation through walls?
Post by: CanRider on October 23, 2015, 01:36:19 PM
So, some of the regulars who trawl through may remember my previous posts RE my carb and fuel economy issues (down to ~7.1L/100km, progress  ).

I have a new, interesting issue. I replaced a fuel line after breaking my fuel tap and couldn't remove the old line. This line is marginally thicker, to the point where the stock clips on the hose barely fit the damn thing. I moved the bike today, I have a locksmith coming around to make me a new key (lost the only one I had, don't ask ), and noticed that there was a weird sort of slime-y-ness to the fuel line itself.

Upon touching the fuel line, there is a very obvious film that has developed, and a fairly strong gas smell. My question is, in sourcing a fuel line that was not necessarily advertised as a 'stock' line, is it possible I have purchased something that actually is not intended for this use?

I can't say that I've noticed this before, when the bike was getting around ~200-400km/week. Not sure whats going on the bike just standing.

Thanks in advance

Your fuel line getting eaten by gas. I have noticed that these new tygon and other synthetic materials tend to start looking "crazed" by the sun.
You could be having that and fuel eating it from the inside.
Cool.

Neat... I mean, not really, but neat. What were the original hoses, rubber?

You must have bought line that was specifically made for fuel,NOT water or other liquids?
Original hoses are rubber.
Handy to get 2 keys cut while the locksmiths there.

2 Keys was their standard service, I didn't even think to ask for only one. It was a hose for fuel. Is a hose for fuel.

Sounds like inferior hose if it has a "slime-y-ness" to it and a distinctive film.Consider returning it to the place of purchase for a refund, and then purchase other hose(from a reputable bike shop)

I'd say the parts person funked up! .. be vacuum line or similar. .. looks same pretty much.. but isn't! .. I say vacuum line cos it usually has the thicker/stiffer walls for structure integrity under vacuum load
