Hi, I am confused at the moment and was wondering if anyone could help me figure something out. Having issues with the charging system. Used to be the rectifier. But back in Sep-Oct, I realized it was something else, because even a new rectifier would not charge my bike.
So, I've been riding with a dead stator. Doesn't charge, but I got a trickle charger have been basically manually charging everytime I run low.
Just the other day, I noticed that during startup, my headlight would grow brighter as I revved up. Bad sign, usually means rectifier issues.
I then fixed and replaced my stator. However, I still don't see a proper charge. I figure probably the stator is good, but rectifier might be dead. I'm wondering if riding with a dead stator can do that.
Any thoughts?
I don't think so, but iI'm not much of an electrical guy. I do know a bad R/R can cook a stator (which then cooks the battery). Have a read thru this, it might help solve some questions:
http://www.thegsresources.com/statorpapers1.php
There's a full 3 pages to read, and it was written more for the first Suzuki GS bikes (1977+), but the GS500 system isn't radically different.
Thanks. My frustrations continued today when I tested my charge @ 5000k and saw that the voltage dropped to 8-9v :(.
Going to order another rectifier and see what happens.
