Title: kat600 shock vs. 120lbs
Post by: brandiwine on February 17, 2004, 07:30:56 PM
ok, i think i'm getting the concept of rear shock adjustments...few more questions though.  alright, i started out with the rebound on 1 and preload on 4, but it was way too jumpy and bumps almost catapult me off.  so i moved the rebound to 3 which helped but i feel like it could be better.  so which way should i adjust the preload?  i'm thinking i need to turn it clockwise from the looks of it to unload the spring a bit more..is that right, is that what i'm wanting to do?..i don't know if that's going towards 1 or 7 though.  or should i probably dial the rebound all the way to 4?  all suggestions welcome!   :dunno:  i'm trying to keep my butt on the seat but not turn it into a boat ride.

I'd move back preload to 3rd notch, which would soften the rear, but as you said it was jumpy, so you had too much preload and too little damping, you already adjusted damping, so it may be time to reduce preload. if 3rd notch doesn't feel right then go back to 4th and adjust damping a little more.

I don't think you need that much preload.  I weight just shy of 170 and have it set at 3-4 preload and 2 rebound typically.  I stiffen rebound and preload in the twisties sometimes, but any more and I get too much hobby-horsing on the expansion joints during freeway riding.

he! he! that is a good visual of how it feels on this one particualr street i have to take home.  seems the frequency of the bumps is just right somehow. so  i'll knock the preload down to 3 and see how that goes.   :thumb:
