Title: Main Petcock
Post by: Jimbob on February 14, 2016, 06:02:12 PM
Hey guys i took off the fuel line from the frame petcock today and part of the petcock came out with the fuel line. Can this go back in or does the petcock need to be replaced?

NOT what u wanna hear,but.......haven't seen that before.  :dunno_black:
If that connection(probably brass?) is just press fitted in i can't see why u can't sparingly use JB Weld.Surfaces affected will need to be dry first if u go down this route.
I'm interested to see what ppl with practical experience in this problem have to say.

mine came out too. just stuff it back in with a few taps of a plastic faced hammer. or hard rubber. the other ones come out even easier.. and when the o-rings go on them... And they just slide out while you're riding, oh lawdy your legs gonna be COVERED in gas.

Ok cheers, I always struggle to get the fuel lines off. Do you guys have any tricks when you put them back on to make it easier to get off next time?

Could RTV be used to seal the part in after re-seating the part?
Just a thought, but I'm a noob, so it may not be the best idea for that application. . . :dunno_black:

Any tips for removing the lines in the future?

Yeah..  gently! ;) ..

also. . Old lines stick more in my limited experience. .

But if old or new and resistant to moving I usually put a little drip of very thin (3in1 oil/sewing machine oil etc) on the bare part of the metal above the line, leave a few mins and then grip gently with cloth wrap on pliers .. slight back and forth rotation and ease it down...

FWIW I put a little smear of blue loctite on the clean and dry metal tube before I tippy tapped it back in!

Word of advice for future fuel line servicing necessities - switch to 5/8" fuel line and hose clamps. It's not worth the hassle to mess with 1/4" just so you don't need hose clamps.

They are only a press fit, and to be honest I am surprised they don't come loose more often. A very light smear of a fuel resistant adhesive will hold and seal it. I recommend Araldite.

With that stuff, once its in it will never come out again.
