Title: 118 Hour Paint Job...
Post by: SuzukiOnly on February 25, 2016, 02:04:29 AM

After:
(http://media.use.com/images/s_1/53a339adfe8fbc92a30c.jpg) (http://www.use.com/FzQXH)

Finally finished. Haven't ridden my bike but once since thanksgiving. Just did a complete teardown/rebuild/paint/upgrade of everything. Soon to come, 100% LED lighting, automatic chain oiler, gear indicator, and gloss black café racer windshield. With those, my GS will be complete, I will literally have nothing left that I wish to do to it other than ride it.  :D My wife is happy about that because my $500 GS has turned into a $1700 GS. But for all intents and purposes, it's a brand new bike now.

Once it's 100% finished, I'm putting a full write up of everything I've done to it in the projects section. But I just finished the paint job tonight and was pretty excited to share it with my favorite forum  :woohoo:

Thanks! It's actually sharpie. Painted it flat white, spent over 100 hours and 12 sharpies free hand drawing on it. Then an enamel layer to protect the ink followed by the final 2k urethane clear coat. It will take 90 days to fully cure, but when it's done it will hold up as well as the factory finish did.

Woot!!! I love it and also can't wait for more pics. What a great feeling it is to get a project done  :star:

It is amazing what can be done with sharpie markers isn't it?? I love them... the 3 helmets I custom "painted" were done mostly with sharpie after I used paint for the base color. It blows people away and I'm super excited to see someone else using them for custom work.

This made my day  :D

You have the headlight ears and the top triple in black ... you should do the dash top plate and headlight shell in black.
Nice work - but didn't it take a lot of labor ? or you used some type of stencil.
Cool.

Thanks all! It's not 100% done just yet, but at least the drawing aspect is. I still have a few things yet to do with the clear coat, but it's going to be at least 90 days for that as I want it to cure 100% before I continue. When I'm finished it will be smooth, with a deep gloss shine.

I'm going to gloss black the backs of the gauges and gloss white the gauge bezel when I do the final work on the gauge cluster. The headlight is staying silver to match the forks and swing arm. This entire project has been quite labor intensive. Pic one was thanksgiving, right before I started, and I'm still only about 95% finished. There was no stenciling involved, all the paint was 100% rattle cans and free hand drawing. And yes, the clear was rattle can, but it's Spray Max, a 2k Urethane clear coat in an aerosol can. A beautiful product worth every penny, BTW.

Sorry about the lighting, but I wanted to get some more pics up tonight. I'll get some good pics in the sunlight after I've had a chance to polish it and finish the gauge cluster upgrades.

It will take 90 days to fully cure,

But, that means no riding for three months.

It's okay to ride now, as I have a couple times already. The 90 day cure just means it takes that long to reach it's maximum strength.

Ok....but I'm gonna be upset if I ever see that bike in person and there's dust pits in the clearcoat...

I'd enter that bike into a show.

I dare you to do the inside of the tank.

Insane!! So weird, I was just thinking this week how cool it would be to do this exact same thing.. now I log on after many moons and I see this. Probably 1000X better than I could do too, this beats 90% of the airbrush jobs I've seen, keep on sketchin brother

How did you do the base white coat? I've always wanted to paint my bike but the price for a pro job is way too much
