Hey Guys! My bike seems to have an issue. Ill be riding for a bit and then my bike will start to sputter, and over a few seconds it will die. If i downshift while doing this, it will sort of restart and continue for a couple more seconds before doing it again. I dont know what is causing this issue. I brought it to a mechanic and he replaced the fuel/oil/oil filter and it went away for a couple weeks. Now the problem has set on again and i dont know why. Any suggestions? I was thinking about using some sea foam on the bike, but thats all i have for ideas! Please help.
Sounds like the carbs are starved for fuel. Here are some ideas:
Your frame mounted petcock might be bad. Try running it on "prime". Check the vacuum line from the left carb to the petcock.
The fuel needles might be sticking closed causing the fuel level in your float bowls to be low, check it using the U-tube method. The fuel should come up to about the top of the float bowl.
There might be an obstruction between the tank and the carbs. Check your fuel lines for kinks. Check (or remove) any in-line fuel filters. Check the in-tank fuel filter. Verify that the tank fuel valve is "on." The slot in the valve should be vertical.
Do you have gas in the tank?
Yep! I have gas in the tank. I have the battery on a charger right now because it died over the winter. O just put some fuel/sea foam mix into it, im hoping this will help clean out the carbs. Is it okay to run the bike on prime all the time? Will it hurt it? Just until i can get the bike to a shop to have them properly clean the carbs
It is fine provided that your fuel needles are functioning properly.
If they don't work well then fuel will slowly flow into your engine or airbox and fill it up overnight.
You will know when your fuel needles fail because you'll go out to your bike and there will be a huge gassy mess.
Just switch it to On or Res when you turn the engine off if you're worried.
Otherwise there is no problem. You lose the ability to switch from On to Res which puts you at risk of running out of fuel. I ran my bike on prime for weeks and had no issues. I didn't even switch to On or Res overnight, just left it on Prime.
Another thing to check is if your gas cap is venting properly.
I had been having this issue for weeks. When it dies try popping the gas cap and starting the bike back up, my gas cap was knackered and when I did this the bike went back to perfect after a second or two with the gas cap open.
It's pretty easy to open it up and clean if that is the source of the issue.
