Title: running lights
Post by: grader on April 23, 2016, 03:39:10 PM
so i buy an 04 gs500f last fall to replace the 08 i lost in a fire 2 years ago. this bike is stock with only 9000k (5500miles) on it. i take it to get it saftied this past week and it needs a few minor things, missing bolts, fairing push pins and the front park light bulb.mechanic then says that the running lites dont work, and he wont certify it without them. i tell him it has no running lites, just a headlite and tail/brake lite. he is thinking the front signal lites are also running lites and is telling me to get proof from suzuki proving it doesent have them. the signals are single filament with only 2 wires.  this is in ontario, canada. why am i suppose to prove something dident come on a bike from the factory? the other repairs are now done, and it is still at the garage. i dont want to get in a shaZam! show with him on monday, and have already paid 150.00 for the inspection. what are your thoughts on this, thanks.

Find a wiring diagram in the service manual (for a Canadian 04 GS500F) and show him the diagram. Here's one iI pulled up from Google (Canadian might be different):

https://www.google.com/search?q=2004+suzuki+gs500f+wiring+diagram&hl=en-US&source=univ&prmd=sivn&tbm=isch&tbo=u&fir=nS3M7wVJGLFNOM%253A%252CF7ONjg1SfY_r4M%252C_%253Bh8bsYfGUca7qnM%253A%252CG-54m3omOsIikM%252C_%253BnTzAtGrdDMs6nM%253A%252CU3_Ski5BB2WpyM%252C_%253BbGeWiIlcsLrCCM%253A%252CF7ONjg1SfY_r4M%252C_%253BugX1HsEwicIG6M%253A%252CGjIgx0zV1qmhiM%252C_%253BgwlaOk3ce7buWM%253A%252C00pQw19Hf8CiDM%252C_&usg=__LM1U3JxcUSdMstJ7ZO-ZA76G_mM%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjG0Zeu6qXMAhXBeT4KHX9NAQIQ7AkIKw&biw=360&bih=615#imgrc=h8bsYfGUca7qnM%3A

This one shows a running light in the headlight, along with the tail light, but that's it. But if  the inspector is that crabby, he will probably want to see the service  manual.

your thoughts on this, thanks.

My thoughts???.....If he thinks there is a problem....... ask HIM to fix it  :dunno_black:

Or......find someone else who knows what they are doing

Or......take it up with the body that oversees and regulates the inspection programme and register a dispute/complaint

The bike provides its own proof, a Suzuki dealer could confirm...

However your certifier man says it must have running lights... burden of proof is on him! ... get him to show you in his documents and books ... exactly where it says all bikes (must) have front running lights and or the gs500 is fitted with running lights as he says!

Take your wiring diagram along anyway... hopefully he can actually read one!

.. he must be a bit sheltered I think !?

ill find out tomorrow, as i did the other work needed in the parking lot at the dealer. i looked at the bill for the inspection and it just lists front park light, the 194 small bulb and the other small stuff. that might be my ace right there as the running lights are not listed on the "to do" list.
i agree that he should have to show they are needed. i know they are not, as it never had them to begin with.

That's exactly your ace! .. he not list them as an issue on first inspection report then you should be good! .  The second inspection is to clear the defects listed only.

If he wants to include the running light issue on the second go around then you take him the issue to regulators as Sledge said..  "professional slackarsedness!" ;)

the mechanic phoned a Suzuki dealer and got the answer to the running lites, so now I'm on the road. now i can add the 2 led running lites to the bike that i purposely left off so it would be stock and pass safety, go figure. :woohoo: :woohoo:

Once you post over 5 times in the main forum area the captcha and or questions should disappear!

Just as a point of reference, my front indicators do have running lights integrated, and I live in Montreal, Canada.
2003 gs500e.

yours is the last E model before the F model in 04. is it from canada or the us? my 04f only has 1 filiment in the signal for the indicator so no running lite.
when i searched on this forum all i found was people adding running lites with new signal indicators and asking how to wire them. :dunno_black:

Its ironic that the inspector has no idea about the bike, even though he's supposed to inspect them. Government at its finest. . . :icon_rolleyes:
