Title: does anyone know where to get valve shims for a good price?
Post by: halffttime on May 03, 2016, 06:14:26 PM
I'm looking around eBay and they're all going for $20+... That's gotta be a mark up, no way something so small and simple can cost that much...

links anyone?

I'd get the Suzuki OEM ones from a reputable site. Read too many stories of the off brand ones breaking and wrecking the engine.

BikeBandit has the OEM shims for $13, so you'd be doubly crazy to go eBay for those.

I've dealt with SHS Powersports since I got my GS in 2010.  Great service...discounted prices on OEM parts.

GS500 shims:

Suzuki list price:
$13.90

SHS Powersports discounted price:
$10.42

Yeah, definitely find a local shop for shims. I mean, your engine is opened up to check the clearances anyway so if you can drive to a dealer for the right ones and get the whole job done in one shot. You shouldn't need to actually replace all 4 shims anyway (assuming your valves haven't been neglected).

Most people change their first shim past the 20K mark. I made it to 15k on my first GS which was flogged, and I also changed it before it was needed.
So unless you're getting past 20, I'd say you probably are just going to check it. No shim needed for that.
Cool.
