Title: Handlebars
Post by: john on February 21, 2004, 10:54:39 AM
Who has good prices on handlebars?  I am looking for rock bottom pricing as I want to experiment with a set of drag bars or something with very low rise and pull.

Good idea on the lower bars.  I had flat bars on mine & they felt great.  Only just cleared the tank and left a dent when I dropped it  :o  :x .
BTW great avatar.  Glad she didn't fall off though.  :thumb:

What about going to Home Depot and picking up a round tube of 7/8in thick aluminum about 24in. long or so?  Would seem to me to work fine and would certainly be the cheap route.

IMO you need some pull so your hands won't be in a totally awkward position.  My Flanders drag bars have the 8" wide center and the 30 degree pullback.

I bet if you just wanted to try them out, the Home Depot idea would be good and they might even be able to do the bends.  You might want closer to 32" length so you can trim with a pipe cutter to fit how you want them.  Some black spray paint for anti-corrosion and you're good.  You also might want to spring for the DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) seamless pipe so the quality is better.

Title: Gino...

I had Gino's drag bars lying about somewhere... or so I thought. Gino you leave it with me... or take it back. I was going to donate it to John... if it was wiht me and you didn't want it.
Yes you want DOM in atleast 1/8th inch wall, and most cheapo ones are rolled and welded sheet (shaZam!) metal... When I make the next batch of bars... I'll send you 3/16 wall DOM... bent to your specs if you let me know what they are. For now experiment away...
Cool.
Srinath.

I've made my own bars out of 7/8ths inch stainless  tubing  ( used on boats for Bimini frames-pretty tough) and a Conduit bender..... an angle somewhere between superbike bars and drag bars ( compared to the bikemasters ).

I'm sure I can probably get some scrap tubing  from where I used to work....

Well Kel, if you have a set of drag bars in the shed I'd gladly take em off your hands.  It would certainly be less hassle than Srinath having to ship one to me -plus I hay hate it in which case I can return it to you.

Like I said, I;'d like to experiment.  No hurries.  But when you do find it I can come over anytime  :thumb:  Or we can meet up at Chillies or even actually Stone Forge and have a beer.

Most excellent John.  Also- I forgot but this is the bar I put the snake in.  You can have that too!  (Cause I am NOT attempting to get it out of there!!!)

Stone Forge... ooohhhhh...  Bring some GSTwin stickers!   ;)

I will take a peek in the shed tonight.
