Title: My new scooter
Post by: Tekime on May 29, 2016, 09:27:16 PM
Okay, I know this isn't GS-related, but I happened to pick up a new "scooter" (as my dad would say).

I've been looking for an older, more powerful bike to tinker on and stumbled across this gem last week. Got an excellent deal on it, just needs a few little things but runs great.

1989 Yamaha FJ1200. After riding this monster for a week and getting back on the GS... wow. What a difference. Suddenly my beloved GS really feels like a scooter. The FJ is about 600lbs, 130HP, you can feel your face peeling off under acceleration.  :o :o

I still plan on keeping, loving and riding my GS for now. Since my bike is my "daily driver" I can finally do some bigger/more extensive maintenance jobs/mods and still have a bike on the road, which is great, plus I miiiiight let a friend take the GS out with me for some rides. :)

I have two Suzuki's and can't believe I got a Yami, but I fell in love with that classic sport-touring superbike look, and, well.. the power haha :D

Yamaha makes some amazing motorcycles!  If they made something GS500-like, I know I'd be after one.

They look cool, they perform awesome, but they also seem to be on the pricier side...  So it'll be Suzukis and Hondas for me for a little while still.

Also know how you feel about brands.  Ever since I started riding I've had nothing but Suzukis, and I've had 4!  This year is my first non-Suzuki.

That is a sharp looking bike  8)

I love the seat's piping... more pics please? I'd enjoy seeing the dash and different angles of the bike overall.

Nice FJ12 tekime. ABS ??? or no ?

You should get a Black 89 GS so it will match it.

Cool.

Buddha, non-ABS, I think ABS was... '91?

Haha, had the same thought when I saw this (http://maine.craigslist.org/mcy/5603851824.html) last night. Guy in my town is selling (not a bad price really). It's a '98 though.. 89/98.. same number.. maybe if I just drive it backwards?

No not for the year, that 89 was the only GS year that had those pin striped long lines with a black metal flake paint on it.
Its to match it in paint scheme almost.
Cool.

Looks nice!
The best number of motorcycles is always M+1     (M=#of current Motorcycles)
I've never understood brand loyalty.
I've had 2 Suzuki's, 2 Kawasaki's, and a Yamaha. I'm more interested in the attributes of a bike and my intended use of it then I am with what manufacturer made it.
BUT, I do understand avoiding certain brands. After reading all the horror stories I don't think I'll ever purchase a Ural. Maybe a roller frame one day.

True, but if you have a good experience with a brand you would tend to stick with them, right?

Like with firearms; I'm a big Ruger fan.  I've had some Ruger handguns, and a Ruger rifle or two, but I wasn't satisfied with Ruger ARs so I got a S&W instead.  For my next handgun I'm looking at S&Ws because I liked my AR so much.  I wasn't satisfied with Ruger's 22/45 either, so I got a Browning Buckmark.  But my past experiences with my Rugers kept me coming back to that brand, and my new experience with S&W has me looking at them first as well.

In the case of motorcycles there's at least one reason why brand loyalty to Honda would be beneficial to the rider.  They flip the placement of the horn and turn signal controls compared to everyone else.
Typically with Honda it's High-beam, Horn, Turn-signals from top to bottom, not HB, TS, H...

The first week or so I had my CB500 I kept hitting the horn when I meant signals and I missed my horn a few times I wanted to yell at a driver.
Having both in the garage and not being able to commit a control to muscle-memory or unconscious could be a bad thing.  Or maybe your brain is good enough to handle the differences if you swap motorcycles often enough.

No. I'd look at every bike in the category I'm interested in equally. For example right now I'm looking for a 250-350cc dual sport. Suzuki doesn't even make one. They have a 200 that's a joke and the good old DRZ400. Which isn't a bad bike, but it's too heavy/tall, plus I want FI. So I'm looking at Honda and Yamaha (currently own a Suzuki and a Kawasaki). If Suzuki did have something 250-350cc I'd still compare stats/prices/reviews from the other makers. All of the big 4 make good bikes.

I didn't remember that about Honda's (it has been 16 years since I've ridden one). I never had a problem in my truck remembering that the horn was on the center console, even though it's on the steering wheel in my car.
But I do stomp on the imaginary clutch pedal in my wife's car every so often.
If I got a Honda and had problems with the horn I would swap on a left hand control cluster from a "normal layout" bike - boom, problem solved.
I do switch between bikes fairly often (I try to never let one sit for over a week) and don't seem to have any issues with differences. To each their own.

As far as firearms go, I understand keeping with one maker for your CC's (even though I don't). But saying you'll stick with brand X for your rifle because you like your brand X pistol is like saying you'll stick with only Honda cars because you like your Honda bike.

If Suzuki stopped all production except for Burgman 400's would you buy one in a few years when what you wanted was a sports bike? Just because you liked your previous Suzuki's? No, you'd get a Kawasaki Ninja.

I think you missed my point.

It's not that you'd look exclusively at brand A because that's what you owned before, it's that brand A has more weight than brand B C D etc.
If I like brand A for one thing, I'll look at brand A first for something I need.  If they don't have what I need or their offering is substandard, I won't hesitate to go elsewhere.  And I'll still consider options from brand B C D.
Just A has a bias because of personal experience.

I like my Honda.  I'd be interested in owing more Hondas.  Doesn't mean a Yamaha isn't on my list, I wouldnt mind a little sports bike and the R3 beats the CBR300R in my opinion, but if I come into a whole new want catagory like an ADV bike I'm going to think "hey, my Honda is awesome, what do they make in ADV bikes?"

I dunno.  I guess at the end of the day I can rationalize as much as I can but people just think differently.  I tend to approach things rather objectively to weigh on paper but if I can't make a decision rationally I go with my gut and my gut usually craves what it's already been eating...
I'm not brand myopic, I just know what has worked well before and go for consistency.
If you can be 100% objective, thats great!  It's not often you meet a Vulcan!

But I tend to build relationships with brands and unless I feel better off with someone else I'll be monogamous.
