Title: HEADLAMP SIZING QUESTION
Post by: Voltron on June 06, 2016, 01:00:39 PM
Hi guys and gals,

I have a question that I cannot seem to find an answer to and I am hoping y'all can help me out. I'm new to bikes and this forum, so please go easy on me.

I just bought my first bike. It's a 2005 Suzuki GS500f and I am going to convert it into a naked version. I have read all of the how tos on the forum already and have made many phone calls and internet research on the subject.

The one problem I am having is finding the right aftermarket headlamp housing for the bike. From my research that I have done already it seems to me that I am looking for a 7 inch headlamp housing.

Can somebody please confirm this for me. And also, will any universal side mount 7" headlamp housing fit? Or does depth and other variables come into play?

I have been looking at the Emgo 7" Kawasaki Style Headlamp ( https://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/emgo-kawasaki-style-7in-headlight-assembly-black-66-65010.html (https://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/emgo-kawasaki-style-7in-headlight-assembly-black-66-65010.html) ), but can't get a definitive answer as to if it will fit my bike or not.

If someone can please give me some definitive answers on this subject I would greatly appreciate the help!

Thanks in advance!

If you want the retro look it should be fine . You will need brackets though .
Just a note. The plder style defusser lenses are a bit inefficient in relation to the clear lens/segmented reflector lights. A properly one of the latter usually will give slightly more and better patterned light.

Thanks for the reply. I do already have OEM fork mounts and headlight brackets that I bought used.

I could just take off the fairings and put the mounts and brackets on and take a measurement for myself, but then I wouldn't be able to ride until I got the new headlight, unless I put it all back together again.

Thanks again.

Anyone else have anything to add? Any recommendations as to a brand they havce used/liked?

Hi and welcome voltron
Answer to your question as long as you have the correct for brackets you can use any 7inch headlight in my experience. I put twin dominators on mine and they fit no problem 7inch ones. I don't think there is any particular light that shouldn't go on as long as it has the mounting points it will be fine it will just be the shape of the back of them with regards to if they would interfere with any wiring/cables as on the standard naked gs all the wiring went in the back of the headlight that should be the only thing that would cause any problems

I used these on mine was straight swap

Hey Nathcarr91,

thanks for the help! Your bike looks amazing! So badass!

I love the black engine and blue accents. How did you get the engine black? Paint?

Voltron: the only problem you'll run into with other lights is the spacing. A 7" bucket might fit perfect, but if you get a 6.25" bucket you might have to put some spacers (washers or similar) to center the light. It's really not that big of a deal, but don't tear everything off and just expect it to be a 10 minute swap - you might have to run to the hardware store for some stuff.

And $76 for ANYTHING from Emgo? I'd pass on that..... personally (and this is just my opinion ), I'd spend that kind of cash for a GS500E light or even an SV650 bucket on ebay.

Haha thanks man 👍 she's currently on eBay just now though haven't got enough room for 2 bikes unfortunately 😞 my dad was gonna buy it but he just hasn't got the cash so eBay'd it.

As for the black engine it was already like that I think the earlier gs were black engines mines 94 plate think it was maybe after 99 they started doing them silver could be wrong.

And I agree with big rich you can get an original gs or sv bucket light for the same money then I would go for them, I have a headlight sitting you can have from my gs the back all painted up but I wouldn't like to put a price on how much it would be to ship from U.K. To I'm assuming the US??

Dominators look good, do they have high and low beam?

They did mate the high beam wasn't anything to write home about to be fare but I think that's just down to the bulbs not being very good

I have to second what Big Rich said. You're cash is better spent on a Suzuki headlight. They can be found for a decent price, and with a little paint or powder coat they will look better then new. Just my opinion though.  :thumb:

It's 7inch with factory bracket but as I've learned, using aftermarket brackets, it's 8inch but that just may be brackets I bought
