Title: Muffler and rejecting?
Post by: Rallyfan on June 08, 2016, 11:51:28 PM
Hello!

My 06 is a California model. The PO apparently put on an exhaust and a drop-in filter (stock box plus K&N filters). The muffler has no identification marks; the springs hooking it to the pipe are Jardine (a local company, incidentally). The muffler is a 4" X 5" oval unit 18" + long.  There is no catalytic converter present, and I can remove the oil filter cap with the exhaust in place. The outside diameter of the exhaust pipe near the muffler slip joint is 2" and all these factors together had led me to believe the system is a Jardine - but the muffler is questionable come to think of it.

Since I bought the bike the muffler can has been beaten up from a minor fall by a PO. The rivets nearest the pipe or bike side were partially sheared, effectively making the muffler a... well... "dual exit" unit. Gasses could escape both ends of the can.

I left it alone for 3 years, holes, torn rivets, scratches and all because I'm a classy guy. Recently the luck ran out. The front of the can tore off from the part that holds the spring loops, as all rivets failed. The bike sounded louder and popped a lot, but nothing dramatically louder frankly. I was surprised to be underwhelmed.

I wired it all back together (repeat: I'm a classy guy...) and will attempt with a friend to weld the can back in place.

If that fails, I've ordered two el cheapo slip on cans. Both are shorter than the existing can.

I've verified the current jetting works with the aftermarket exhaust and drop in filter. More meaningfully, my mechanic agrees. Ostensibly the jets are not stock since the plugs look great despite the aftermarket exhaust and filter.

Question: the classic question. If I swap one aftermarket muffler for another, shorter one, should I rejet?

Specifically: What symptoms should I look for when riding to indicate lean mixture?

Thanks!

it was kind of difficult to figure out what you wanted from your post.  short answer is probably not.

with the shorter muffler it will probably run just how it is now.  if it works well enough for you now then you probably won't notice any difference.
