Title: does everyone like a wider rear?
Post by: Jespenshade12 on June 09, 2016, 12:00:55 PM
so.. I have a 2001 gs and Im starting to look at tires. The stock is a 130/70 17 but I keep seeing deals on 140/70 17. How wide can I go and will it hurt the riding style???

I have a 140/80 on my GS and I love it. I don't ever see myself going back to a smaller tire. I didn't have to modify anything!  :D

I replaced the original rear with a 140/70 and am very happy with it.   :thumb:

I've run 110/70, 110/80, 120/70 front and 130/70, 130/80, 130/90, 140/70, 140/80, 150/60, 150/70 rear tires on my GSs on the stock 3.0 and 3.5" wheels.  All of the tires I've run have been tire/rim fitments approved by the tires maker except the 150/60 rear.  No alterations are required to the bike for any of these sizes on stock wheels except the 150/60 and 150/70 which come close to or touch the brake rod and may require bending the rod a bit.  I've always felt that the type of tire, ie bias, radial, supersport, sport touring, touring, etc has more effect on handling than the size does within the relatively narrow range of sizes I've used.  A different tire compound means more than a small difference in width.

I'm going to try and run the widest I can fit.  Sounds like 150/60 and 150/70 are the widest options.  Which one will NOT cause the speedo to be off?

The speed is measured from the front wheel, if you're just changing the rear it won't make a difference.

Good to know thanks.  My first look would be at the rear...maybe go wider front too?  I prefer the look of the wider tires more then anything.

Great!! this is what I thought but I wanted to see what everyone thought first. I love my GS and just want to get the best out of it.

I mounted a 150/60. Ends up 146/65 because of the rim.  You have to modify the brake torque arm.
