Title: Fixing a '93 GS500 questions
Post by: jjmaine on June 16, 2016, 12:55:49 AM
In my first post I said I had a 1992 but I lied, it's a '93.  Ooops!  I've cleaned the carbs over this last week and am just waiting for the kits to arrive so I can put them back together.  Also waiting for a set of intake boots to show up.  I'm wondering If anybody knows of a suitable replacement for the o ring/seal that sits under the slide guide?  I'm hesitant to remove it because I have read that they are very hard to find.  Maybe a decent Viton o ring would work?

After the carbs I will have to do something about the tank.  It has some rust and one pin hole in it that I can see.  Can anyone recommend a good tank liner and a good method of removing that rust?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help!  I'm sure I'll have at least a thousand more questions...

There have been several discussions on this board about tank liners/treatments. You can find many people's opinions on the topic with the search function.

Not sure about the slide guide o ring.  Can't picture where that one is

I put this in the sticky "Carburetors and their various parts, internal and external with pics.STICKY PLZ"

Original part number: 13278-47090

It's not on any parts diagram of the gs but it is mentioned on this page:

Thanks Lucas, I'll do some digging.  And thanks for the link afatrat, I googled the part number and found the slide guide o rings for $1.27 each.  I ordered some but may just try 10mm x 1mm Viton o rings to get me by.

From what I've been reading I may be better off just finding a tank that's in good shape.  I would hate to waste money trying a liner just to screw it up or have it clog the carbs all over again and then buy a new tank anyway...  I would probable try if there weren't any holes in mine though.

If it is just the pinholes keeping you from trying this yourself the tank liners will plug up any pinholes.

Well, it is the holes and the over all condition of the tank.  It is in pretty rough shape and will need paint also.  After I get it running there is still a few things I'll have to fix (fork seals for one) so I have some time to make up my mind.

That brings me to another question.  Do I need to put the airbox and vacuum lines back on the bike to start it?  Or can I just put a hose on the carbs to funnel gas into the bowls and fire it up?

You can just use a funnel.  I have a long skinny funnel that a fuel line fits snug into and I jam that between the engine and frame.  Be ready to refill it if you are running the engine for a while.

If your carbs overflow while doing this that means your the fuel valve dealies in your carb bowls need to be replaced.

Cool, carb kits got here yesterday and the intake boots should be here tomorrow.  Maybe this weekend I'll have enough time to put it back together to see it run.  I'm guessing it should, it has compression and spark.  Just needs some air and maybe a sip of petrol.

There is some gunk on the engine where the intake boots seal to it, maybe somebody used some type of gasket maker?  Can I just plug the openings with towels and sand/scrape it off?  I don't want to ruin my chances at getting the boots to seal is all.  Thanks!
