Title: Needing some help on troubleshooting
Post by: th3r3n3g4d3 on June 19, 2016, 02:34:40 PM
Hi folks,

Long time lurker here. I have an odd issue that arose last week, and its kept me off my bike during the nice days. I am hoping someone could possibly help diagnose my issue.

2008 GS500F - 13800km's

Symptoms:
- Occurs between RPM range of 4500-6000 (below & above is fine)
- Engine and Tacometer begins to 'blip' down, almost stalling at times
- Occurs in any gear or neutral
- While riding it feels like the bike is 'lurching' or engine braking when the 'blips' occur
- Muffled backfire-like sound

Treatment so far:
- Regular oil change and fuel top up (using premium gas)
- Replaced air filter
- Replaced spark plugs
- Cleaned carbs & jets
- New battery (bought last year)

I tried my best to take a video but the battery was dying on the bike. Had to put it on a trickle charger for the day.

I find it odd that it begins in that specific RPM range. Let me know what you think.

sounds like the carbs are in need of adjustment. Not just cleaned. I believe during that range, Mid, Your needle starts to lift off the seat. Low range is all pilot jet, High range is where the size of your jet comes into play. You may need to check the spring and rubber gasket at the top of the carb. I could be wrong but have you looked at that yet?

check out this link. http://www.dansmc.com/carbs2.htm     Go down to Jet Needle. Number 5

I checked the gasket and it seemed fine. I'm not losing any fuel or anything.

I havent checked out the carb needle. I havent had much time to work on it since I cleaned the carbs, but ill look into it. Does it sound like I have to adjust for leaner or richer?

no.. If it is all factory, then there shouldnt be any adjustment. the only adjustment you would do is raise or lower the needed using the clip on top if its been jetted.

So after some trouble shooting, I think it may be an electrical issue. Theres a relay/solenoid near the battery that seems to be working oddly/not grounding properly. Going to look into that.

Just an update:

Ive replaced the starter solenoid, with negative results.
I replaced the battery, as it was not within factory acceptible levels and suzuki confirmed the battery was toast. The new battery did not fix the issue.
Also replaced the voltage regulator/rectifier, with negative results.

I then found a handy guide online regarding testing the gs500's charging system. All signs point to the stator not correctly charging the battery.

Any ideas? Could the stator be the culprit to my issues?
