Title: Battery Question
Post by: maverickfhs on July 08, 2016, 06:13:24 AM
Guys, I have just acquired a 'new' to me 2000 GS500 and have few questions:

1- Bike does not start without a jump and when starts, runs just fine. I need to replace the battery. What are are some 'cheap and good' options for a battery? I have read and researched a lot about it and there are so many alternatives.

2-Planning to go over the bike thoroughly. It has almost 6,000 miles. Should I be paying special attention to anything or replacing anything in particular?

3-So far, I am planning to replace all fluids, check all bolts, clean air filter( replace if needed), clean/adjust chain.

Looking forward to all of your input and help. Thanks  :thumb:

I have gotten 10 years out of an AGM type battery with a Battery Tender.

Thanks very much. What brand of AGM and how much did it cost you?

It was an OEM YUASA, it cost me $6800.00, it came with the bike  :icon_mrgreen:

Now that's funny.  O0

BTW, OEM YUASA is like $50-$60, is it good?

Statistically YUASA batteries over the years have been very good to me and are my battery of choice, if I get to choose.

Think, I'll bit the bullet and buy a YUASA one. Is there a price difference between Yuasa YB10L-A2 or Yuasa YB10L-B2? I'll go for a cheap one :)

The A2 has the breather on the left, the B2 has the breather on the right (which is what GS500 requires).
IMHO you would be a complete and utter idiot to buy a liquid acid battery, they are far more hassle, need regular maintenance and spill nasty metal eating stuff if you fall off.
Do yourself a real, genuine favour and buy a gel battery, they cost more but never give you bad starting 'mares - cheap in this case is NOT worth it...
If you decide that acid is worth the saving then write again in 12 months when you've discovered that you HAVE to buy ANOTHER battery...

Thanks for your suggestion and advice. I can get a Gel or AGM one and drop an acid one. What are the price range for them? Do you have any suggestion? Based on my research, I looked at a few:

Hi Maverick,
I hope you are doing well, man.
I see you are a new user with 8 posts.

Please don't be offended, but may I offer a little friendly advice about using this site, from someone who has been here for quite a while?

Try using the "search" function before asking a typical question like what kind of battery should you buy.  :)

Most things here have been asked and answered at some point.
And there is a wiki, too, with lots of helpful info by topic.

So try doing some searches and then if you still can't find something, ask.

Some people get pretty annoyed when you don't do your own homework initially.  :)

Best wishes and welcome to this great site.

Yours,
Trwhouse

Of course and thanks so much for your input and advice. I do apologize from all experienced users, including you but I didn't do all of my research and homework before it.

I have looked at Wiki: http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Main.Battery

Also, did a lot of search on the forum, as well as 'google' and I was pretty set on 'Scorpion' (https://www.batterystuff.com/powersports-batteries/sYT10L-A2.html) or Interstate (http://www.interstatebatteries.com/search.aspx?dsNavigation=Ns~product+Type%7c101%7c1%7c,Nrc~id-3%7cid-11,N~4294784989-2147384830-4283758503)

Only reason why I am asking here, because I have seen and read many mixed reviews about Scorpion. Majority of the users have reported good usage out of Yuasa or similar lead acid ones.

I hope you understand my perspective and concern.

I just put my new battery in.  It seems a bit tall but matches what I took out that had been in there.  Is there not normally a battery hold down? or does the seat itself act as one?

See other thread but the seat has a rectangle of hi density foam or rubber that is above battery normally
