Hi Guys, first time poster...need some help...
did a valve clearance check. Went well but i needed to loosen the accelerator cable to get access, but now i can't get the cable back in position (the rear of the carbs). So I thought if i loosened the decelerator cable i would get more slack (i think that was a mistake)...so now i have both cable locknut, adjuster and captive nut off for both cables attaching to the carburetor....how do i get these back on??
Do i have to detach the cables from the twist grip? I tried that but i can't seem to get access to the wires in the twist grip case, do i take the whole thing off??
Please help i'm very confused...I have a 2005 GS500.

I found it's easiest to disconnect the throttle cables from both ends (carb & handlebar) and work both ends simultaneously. To get access to the cable ends at the handlebar, you will have to remove the screws fastening the throttle grip housing and the support for the throttle cable at the grip. Once you have the handlebar ends of the cables open, this is an excellent opportunity to lube them.
Make sure you have the captive nut as loose as it can be on the carb end for both the throttle & return cables, this will help immensely. Also make sure neither cable ends up at too drastic of an angle. As you're tightening the cables at the carb end, check frequently that the throttle snaps closed normally and doesn't stick. Save the adjustment at the handlebar for the end.
It's a little tricky to explain without doing/showing, but this how I do it.
I did over 20 valve checks while putting 180k miles on my 97 and 02 GSs and never took either end of the throttle cable/cables loose to check valves. :dunno_black: Even when I had to replace a broken exhaust valve caused by a sticking bucket I just took the carbs loose from the head and hung them over the outside of the frame on the cables while I pulled the head on the 02 GS.
