Title: GS500 Dual Sport Project
Post by: Bleached on July 18, 2016, 06:13:56 PM
5 years ago, I started a GS500 dual sport project.  I recorded the progress and engineering behind the build here:

http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/gs500-dual-sport-project.738523/ (http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/gs500-dual-sport-project.738523/)

Cliff notes: low mileage GS, DR650 front end connected by a custom machined stem and bearings, SV650 rear shock = Dual Sport fun.  The GS is REGISTERED in RI so this project is sold with a bill of sale and a registration.  Anything before MY2000 in RI does not need a title.  Have the keys as well.  You should be able to register this no problem.

$600
- basically a dual sport conversion kit with a free parts bike.

It's currently 100% disassembled, the frame has been stripped and primed, the bearings and pressed in, and the custom front stem is pressed and ready to go.  Here is is put together, before taking it apart for finishing.

(front end should be dropped and inch or 2 in the pic above)

Since then, I've moved, started 2 new jobs, had a baby and have another one on the way.  5 years later, it's time to move it along as an unfinished project.  EVERYTHING is included - a complete 4170mi GS500 in parts (everything lableled pretty well), DR650 front end with custom machined stem, SV650 rear shock swap.

The bike itself, while low mileage, sat outside for a long time before I grabbed it.  It's dirty and tipped over a few times during storage, but I had it running with new plugs, a carb clean and fresh fuel in a couple hours.  Here are some selected pics of the current goldmine of parts:

Some other items: includes a nice set of aluminum dirt bars, includes DR650 front caliper.  I removed the ignition from the GS.  It fits perfectly and bolts right up to the DR upper triple tree.  Obviously, the GS stem and lower triple were pretty much sacrificed to this build.

Everything is located in Scituate, RI.  I have no intentions of parting this out, so pick up only.  Take the whole package, part the bike and get the dual sport conversion bits for free!

No currently parting this out - will keep you in mind if it comes to that, but I would imagine that freight on the engine would cost more than the engine.....

FYI, Greyhound freight is a great way to ship stuff like this. Stick the engine in one of those big rubbermaid storage boxes and you can probably ship it for less than $150 as long as you have a greyhound station near your home.

If you ever do decide to part it out, I would interested in the DR front end conversion
